Why spend £170 on the Denon DAB separate when you can get a freeview box for £50 and you get digital radio just the same.
Thats the question i'm asking myself as i'm fed up of the interference on radio 5 on my old analogue tuner.

I came to the site with a similar problem. I listen to radio 1 and 4, in a non TV area, and here in Mid Wales there are no free view channels apart from pointing to Astra 28.2 east [sky sat] and using the free radio channels from there. My prob is, like yours, signal fluctuation. I realise I would need another LNB or another sky type dish. I use a Technomate 1500 ci + for my TV system and this displays to screen.
Is it possible to obtain a receiver for just Sat radio with only audio output and with a display. Any ideas.

DAB has local radio and Classic FM. Freeview doesn't.

I can listen to DAB in the garden, out walking, in the car, in the bathroom.

But if you only listened to radio 5 is there any point spending more than the cost of a freeview box?

No and the bandwidth is higher on the Freeview box than on DAB. So through an amp and speakers you might get better sound quality too.

Just because a TV channel claims it has xKhz of bandwidth to play with doesn't mean that the signal it is fed with is sourced from the same bandwidth. In short, if you get it from (from my point of view) Sutton Coldfield via DAB or DVB, it will be pretty much the same quality. The variables are obvious like how far away from the transmitter you are and how good is your aerial and receiver. If as much effort went to pulling in a signal for DAB as most do for their DVB then there would be significantly fewer complaints about reception quality but I suppose that still leaves the MP2 controversy. Moral of the story is use what works best for you. I live in steel reinforced concrete so DVB radio accessed via a rooftop antenna is the best solution for me. When at my GF's then DAB gets me greater choice and reasonable quality (alternative is cable radio). When we are finally permanently co-habiting then I plan to have a loft DAB antenna. Maybe by then we will have DAB+ but that is a whole other discussion!

Freeview doesn't broadcast Planet Rock either.

The answer to this one is pretty simple. Just because something can do something, doesn't mean it does it very well. You use the hardware designed for the job, not hardware designed to do something else.

Let me put it another way. If you want to transport a coffin from the funeral parlour to the cemetery, you use a hearse, not a van. If you want to listen to radio, you use a radio tuner, not a TV tuner.
