Any tips on improving wire aerial on bedside DAB alarm?

Hello, my first forum post but I have found you all very useful with some freeview and lcd tv advice over the last few months.

I've just bought a Logik DAX200, which does not pretend to be a top quality DAB receiver, but is a well thought out bedside stereo DAB alarm solution. As has been remarked on this forum its chief let down is a stringy piece of wire as an aerial, without any obvious interface for an external aerial. Most stations come through fine without any attention to the aerial except all BBC stations which I presume have their own transmitter that isn't the one mounted on the tower block I can see from my window.

My aim is to be able to wake up to non-medium wave Five Live or the World Service.

I have improved the BBC reception considerably by stripping back some of the wire aerial sleeve and crudely attaching it to some spare speaker cable which I then run up the wall, but there is still unacceptable drop-out.

I have an FM wall socket in the next room connected to a communal aerial seven storeys up, so I would drill through the wall and try to connect the aerial core with a plug for this if I thought it would solve the problem.

Any advice on this or other suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this model fits my needs in every other way (usb mp3 alarm is great!) and I have a Pure in the kitchen for my serious DAB listening.

Hi there. I can't help, but i have exactly the same problem and tried the same speaker wire trick too!

I posted on here but was unable to get anywhere with it.

If you find out how to improve it, please let me know

The BBC stations are all transmitted on the same mux, so the reception (or lack of) will be the same accross all their stations.

The speaker wire trick is a good one, Generally, DAB reception should be best with this type of aerial is placed vertically, however it is usually possible to get a better signal from a specific transmitter by 'pointing' the aerial cable in that direction (if you know which direction it is) I find that runing the cable up the corner of the room (for the vertical bit) provides a good signal. the extra left when you get to the top, I have running along the top corner in the direction of the transmitter I can't otherwise recieve.

I wouldn't suggest connecting a radio with a built-in aerial to a 75 Ohm FM antenna unless you really know what you are doing. I am sure someone will correct me, but it is likely to be a totally different signal to what the radio is expecting. If my thinking is correct, the 75 ohm aerial gives a much higher signal, and could potentially damage the radio.

I also use a portable DAB radio with a short wire aerial, and find while in work, the easiest way to obtain a signal is to run it 50% across the table, and 50% vertical up the wall.
