Signal "disapears"

Hi
I have a Denon TU 1800 DAB radio which I use to record from but as I record late at night I leave the system on when I go to beb but occosionaly when I come down in the morning there is no signal just the station info displayed on the display?
I only use an indoor airiel but have good reception.
Is this "normal" for DAB or do I have a faulty receiver?

Re: Signal "disapears"

I too have a Denon TU-1800DAB tuner which is away for repair at the moment.

The Fault?

When it's been on for a while, it just goes silent. I can bring it back on by changing the channel, then it's fine for a while again, then goes silent again. This keeps repeating, with the "time on" getting shorter each time.

Sounds like there's an inherent fault here. Bear in mind that Denon equipment comes with a two year warranty.

Best of luck.

Cheers,

Martin.

Re: Signal "disapears"

I returned mine to Superfi, from whom I purchased it just over a year ago. Once I get it back, I'll post to let you know, and also to tell you what was wrong if they advise me.

Cheers,

Martin.

Re: Signal "disapears"

FWIW I have an acoustic solutions tuner and a seperate Teac unit and they both do this now and again - come back to the room and the music has stopped. They used to be almost perfect when I lived in London. Signal strength and quality are not what they were now I've moved to the sticks and haven't got my external aerial up yet. I suspect there is an inherant weakness in the design of DAB which means some loss of signal or intereference can kill the audio reception but leave the text info running and the tuner believing it is playing back.
As with your unit switching source or channel restores things...I've just learnt to live with it because mine don't do it with increasing frequency - that sounds like a fault.

Re: Signal "disapears"

Interesting. I'll see what Superfi have to say and post back.

For what it's worth, I live in a very good signal area - I take it that this never happened to you when you lived in London?

Cheers,

Martin.

Re: Signal "disapears"

The Teac would sometimes go silent if left playing all day in London - but not very often, maybe once a month tops. On a bit of wire it loses the NOWNorwich multiplex every three or four hours and you come back to muted XFM.

Re: Signal "disapears"

Okay. Well, all I can do is wait and see what Superfi say but, as I mentioned previously, mine goes silent every time it's on.

Cheers,

Martin.

Re: Signal "disapears"

Hi
Mine is probably only used a couple of times a week but I would say is off 60% of the time I leave it on but as this is over night I dont know how long it takes to go off as it usually fills a cd up so must be longer than that.
I will try and leave it on in the day and let you know how it goes.

Re: Signal "disapears"

As promised - an update.

Superfi have had my TU-1800DAB Tuner for approximately six weeks now - I always try to be patient when someone is doing something for me, as I believe that if you harass them, then you're likely to get shoddy work.

However, I reckon that six weeks or thereabouts should be long enough to at least have heard back from them, but nothing - just silence. Therefore, yesterday I called their service manage who, having advised me that the unit had been sent to some other company who carry out Denon repairs, promised to speak to them and get back to me. He called me back about an hour later to advise me that Denon are supplying a (new) replacement unit, and that it should be with Superfi later this week and subsequently with me shortly thereafter.

Therefore guys, read into this what you will - they obviously acknowledge that there's a problem but can't fix it - seems strange to me but I'm not complaining if I'm getting a brand new unit. I'll let you know how things go with it once I've had a chance to test it.

Cheers,

Martin.

Well, the new unit arrived today - will get it set up over the weekend sometime and let you know how things go.

elliotjames - have you done anything about yours as yet and, if so, have you managed to get a result?

Cheers,

Martin.

Re: Signal "disapears"

My DAB 300S does it occasionally - every single time it's happened it's been tuned to Digital1 Network, and they have either...

1. Had overnight network wide switching breaks
2. Had Waltham off air
3. Had Belmont on low power.
4. A combination of the above...

My XDR-S1 on the other hand constantly crashes on Chill, Saga, Classic Gold, Life and BBC Radio 2 - but only after 23:00 for some strange reason

Hi there - latest update.

On two or three occasions now, I have left the unit on for quite a few hours and there's been no sign of it doing the same as the last one, so I believe that tells us that it was the old unit that was at fault, and nothing to do with the DAB system itself.

If you haven't yet contacted the company from which you purchased yours, then I would suggest that you do so, quoting my experience if that's a help to you.

Cheers,

Martin.

Re: Signal "disapears"

I've had my Tu 1800 DAB for about a month now ind it alao does this, seems to only do it on "Chill" though.

Re: Signal "disapears"

Well I have had my tuner returned from denon with "unit soak tested and no fault found"
Set it up yesterday to record the radio and the record level indicators on my cd recorder were showing an input but went blank after 5 mins.....I dont have it through my amp as yet and theres no headphone socket to listen to the tuner so will have to get some leads and give it another try later after work.
I think its going to be the same as before.
Will keep you posted

If I were you, I would contact them again and point them to this thread, thus letting them know that you are aware that this would appear to be a common problem and that you expect them to do something about it for you.

Do keep us posted.

Cheers,

Martin.

Re: Signal "disapears"

I heard there were such problems with the Denon from my dealer. So I bought the Marantz instead. My Marantz is only two weeks old. Last night, the DAB failed. Can't receive any station. Heard Denon and Marantz belong to the same company. Tough luck~
