A quick read of the specs on the Vita website, it states:
"Integrated universal iPod Dock supports and charges all iPod models produced from January 2004 onward. iPod Shuffle and earlier models are supported by front and rear auxiliary inputs."
The 2nd Generation iPod was only available in 10Gb and 20GB sizes and was released in July 2002, so it may be a 3rd generation iPod you have which was released April 2003 and therefore is still not supported via the dock connection.

The only way to use your old iPod is to connect it to one of the auxiliary audio inputs on the front or rear of the unit as is quite clear from the spec on the site.

I would try putting the iPhone into Airplane mode which should reduce any interference caused to the radio reception.
