New to internet radio - pls recommend some stations to preset

I am just about to venture into the world of internet radio and was looking for some recommendations of stations from around the world to listen into for a while to see if I like them.

So what type of music do I listen to?

Well I like a lot of the modern rock music like Kings of Leon, Muse, Killers, Kasabian, Ian Brown, Stereophonics, Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, Manics etc.

But I was a child of the late 70s and 80s, so I also like so much of the music from those days such as Prince, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Guns N Roses, INXS, Led Zep, Stones, Creedence, The Cult etc.

Plus like to listen to a bit of blues every once in a while. Love the JJ Cale type of blues.

So has anyone got any recommendations of stations I could add to my Reciva account? Only music I'm not really mad about is overly-dancey stuff or real heavy metal. Will generally tolerate most other things.

Thanks.

Not sure how you want to listen/method you want to use, but try this.
Free Internet Radio - SHOUTcast Radio - Thousands of Free Online Radio Stations

Has everything you want, depending on how you want to listen to it.

You could link a laptop into your hifi or if you have a PSP you can also do the same thing as you can get shoutcast on that also.

hope that helps.

Re: New to internet radio - pls recommend some stations to preset

I have just bought an Internet Radio for beside my bed, as there was a special deal on CDiscount.

If I think it is good and enjoy it, then I will probably invest in a good quality one for my living room.

Thanks for your advice. My initial question was actually about actual stations themselves - named stations so I could just pick them straight away rather than having to sample many hundreds myself.

Re: New to internet radio - pls recommend some stations to preset

Judging by your list of faves this is probably not really up your street, but my own favourite internet station is Stellar Attraction Progressive Rock Internet Radio (www.stellar-attraction.com). They play a terrific range of old and new prog, from which I've managed to pick up on a load of newer artists within the genre.

You might also try the Internet Radio Guide to search for genre specific stuff.

Good luck!!

You've found https://www.reciva.com/ I take it? It's like a portal, you create an account, log in then connect to it via your radios and then scroll through the radio stations you've added to your profile. It's kind of like the Pure 'Lounge' to give you an idea.

Re: New to internet radio - pls recommend some stations to preset

Well just to keep you all updated, I received my Bush radio a few days ago.

OK I know its not top of the range but I wanted to dabble in it cheaply for a while before I made the big plunge with a better quality radio. I got my Bush one for £21.99 delivered and I must say I'm really impressed by the quality and workings of it.

I have checked out a few stations and all I can say is I am very impressed. There such a massive choice out there that anyone could find anything that would appeal to them, no matter how obscure their music choice.

The fact that it also streams music from your PC is great too. Handy just to set it to random and enjoy hours of music in the background.

Beats listening to annoying DJs for 45mins of every 1hr.

Re: New to internet radio - pls recommend some stations to preset

Have you given BBC 6Music a listen yet?

Going from your taste in music you should like what they play - and the DJs tend to be less annoying! Definately worth a try; plus with it being BBC there's the 'Listen Again' feature, so if you miss a show you can usually catch it later... podcasts are generally good too.

If you like comedy mixed with decent music, Adam & Joe do an awesome show on Saturday mornings from 9-12.

Let me know if you find any good alternatives though, as it sounds as if we'd enjoy the same stations.

Failing that, can your radio pick up last.fm etc?
If it can, then last.fm is a great option for making your own radio station full of stuff you love.

Re: New to internet radio - pls recommend some stations to preset

I have a few rock stations programmed in on mine, might be worth checking out:

Nation Radio
NME Radio

And Manchester Radio Online is quite a nice station that you might wanna check out.

Thumbs up Re: New to internet radio - pls recommend some stations to preset

NME was a good shout from @ChrisWyatt, Q radio is also worth a look - its not quite as 'new music' as NME, but again the music should be right up your street.

Its only a basic Bush TR2015 that was going for £22 delivered from a HotUKDeal a couple of weeks ago.

I had always considered internet radio but always thought they were overpriced, so when I seen this deal I went for it. Its sitting beside my bed.

I was thinking if my initial impressions were good then I'd buy one of the better quality ones for the living room.

Sorry for resurrecting an oldish thread (Didn't see the point in starting a new one) but I've recently purchased an Internet radio and before i get to carried away would love to know the same info as 'RMCF'. It seems to be something not easily found and as someone who doesn't know bits from bytes I'd love to know how much listening to a 128k station would eat up. Are we talking a few MB over a few hours or way more?

Anyway many thanks in advance

CBC Radio 3 (Canadian alternative/indie stuff) and RadioIO stations (Eclectic, Acoustic, etc depending on your tastes) are very good.

To make calculations easy, imagine it was 100 Kbps.
3600 seconds in an hour.
3600 x 100000 bits = 360 megabits = 45 MegaBytes in an hour.
