Are there any decent DAB radio's that aren't really small?

I'm upgrading the kitchen radio, which is getting very old, and has a cassette tape player and i'm getting annoyed with the analogue tuning =P

While i've been searching, all the DAB radios i see in my budget are small portable ones. The radio will be hooked up to the mains in the kitchen all the time, so i'd rather have something bigger, and stero if possible.

So baisically:

DAB/FM Radio
Stereo
Mains Plug
Not Small
between £0-£60 preferably

anything decent out there to suit my needs in this price range?
Anything is a step above what we've got at the moment!

I have one of these and rate it highly. Roberts RD21B Ecologic 4 DAB/FM RDS Digital Stereo: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Geoff.

PS sorry, it's a bit more than £60.00

Another alternative within your budget http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/stor...&category_oid=

If it were me and I was looking for a cheap radio for the kitchen, I'd go for something like this.

If you can live with the aerial issue as per one of the reviews, I think it's a good budget choice. My BUsg personal radio has been going strong for 5 years and has a better tuner than some of the more expensive radios, so just because it's a budget make doesn't always mean it'll be poor. And the build quality can't be any worse than the Roberts' Wi-Fi radio I have!

For £35, it's certainly worth a look if you can find a display model anywhere.

Re: Are there any decent DAB radio's that aren't really small?

Thanks for the replies everyone!
I'm getting tempted to stretch my budget though

the £70 Roberts radio looks good, I also saw a £75 Pure EVOKE 2XT, which one do you think is better?

The bush one seems ok for the price, but the others looks like more of a kitchen power radio with all the buttons and bigger display =D

The sony one seems ok too, any ideas which once will have the best quality sound?

also keith, i can't find the radio you mentioned either =O

Re: Are there any decent DAB radio's that aren't really small?

Although the 2XT beats the Roberts' hands down as far as build quality is concerned amongst other things, I understand it's an elderly product and people are having issues getting them repaired. Surpassed by the more costly 2S model...

Re: Are there any decent DAB radio's that aren't really small?

Hmmm ok thanks all

So...

£75 refurbished Pure Evoke 2XT
£70 Roberts
£57 Sony XDRS10DABM

is the price difference worth going for the Sony?
What's going to give me better performance for the price?
i will probably pick the roberts over the pure unless i get persuaded otherwise =P
I'll probably buy in the next few days...

thanks again guys!

Re: Are there any decent DAB radio's that aren't really small?

The Amazon link I posted for the Sony is now showing a price of £108.93 which must be an error. Play.com do these Play.com (UK) : Sony XDRS10DABZ Portable DAB Radio : Electronics - Free Delivery

Play.com (UK) : Sony XDRS10DABM Portable DAB Radio : Electronics - Free Delivery

Geoff.

PS I've heard the Sony in Comet or Currys and it has a good sound.

A stereo digital radio will cost more than a mono digital radio. If you are willing to pay a bit more for a radio I would suggest a PURE ONE ELITE. I saw one at an M&S store in Birmingham and they are not that small. You could go for the BUSH models but they will not be as good as the PURE models. The PURE ONE ELITE radios are normally priced at around £70-£80. A bit over your budget, but I have found one at CO-OP ELECTRICAL website for £65 including delivery.

If you want something more powerfull you could go and buy a Micro DAB system. Argos, Comet and Currys sell them but more than £60.

Re: Are there any decent DAB radio's that aren't really small?

alright thanks all

i took a trip to currys today, had a listen to the roberts and sony ones.

the roberts one can get loud i think (and has bass/treble dials) but i think the sound quality of the sony is actually better. I think i will go for a Sony one =D

i wanna try and find it for the same price in black though, just for a bonus

thanks again for the help/suggestions rapid and prof.yaffle. Thanks also mikey but i think this sony one will be a good gadget for the price.

thanks again

Post OXX Classic 600

I recently bought an OXX Classic 600, which is a decent sized and reasonably good looking and quite heavy mains-only table-top DAB+/FM/Internet radio finished in a white or black lacquered wooden enclosure www.oxxdigital.com

Its my second DAB+ radio - my other is a Sangean DPR-69+ which was just fine for bedside listening, with stereo from the headphone jack - but no sleep/time/alarm functions at all.

To the OXX:

Sound quality is very good with 5W audio output, but it's effectively a rear-vented small enclosure, so if it's near to a wall it can be a bit boomy. it has an AUX input, on the back panel, so you can plug in your iPod/PC etc.

I have tried out its internet radio functionality, but so far the only negatives for me are as follows:

1) Headphone jack is on the back panel, so it's awkward to plug in and out if you use them often, as I do

2) Audio/Headphone out is STEREO, which is great and the quality is very good - BUT the output level when connected to a decent stereo is way too low.

3) Only 4 presents (each for FM and DAB+)

4) To activate sleep function you have to navigate the menu

5) The display is on 24/7 wasting energy, but you can set brightness for both and "on" and "standby"

6) As with all these gadgets there are no tone controls at all - it would be handy to crispen up some speech, add a bit of treble for older ears etc.

7) When unplugged station presets are retained, BUT the time and date are erased and you have to reset.

8) There is no separate Line output, which would be useful.

Hope that helps!
