UK to Australia - Audiowave DAB-907

Hi There,

We have recently unearthed our Audiowave DAB-907 (from Tesco's) radio from our consignment having moved from the UK to Australia . We know that the area we are in is now broadcasting DAB signals and indeed, the radio has found them following completion of the 'factory reset' function. Now although the stations have been picked up and are displayed by name on the viewer, we receive no sound from any of them. When we switch the radio to the FM mode, it operates as normal so we know that the amplifier / speaker are not faulty.

We would be grateful for any words of wisdom on how we might get the radio to work properly with DAB broadcasts in Australia.

Many thanks

Hi guys:

Yup, in Australia we went strait in with DAB+ so standard DAB receivers won’t work. While a standard DAB receiver will read the signals meta-data and station ID it can’t decode the audio.

Maybe so but many of the Australian stations are using 64k AAC+, which isn't even FM quality, let alone CD quality.

It's about the same quality as 192k MP2 that Radio 3 uses on DAB, and Radios 1 to 4 use on Freeview & satellite.

Don’t to feel hard done by; Using DAB+ just means the ensemble operators can cram more stations per carrier signal. You could say we just get more crap rather than better crap…

I would argue that 64kbps AAC+ sounds no better than 128kbps MP2, I have heard DAB at 192 kbps and it actually sounds comparable to FM, 128kbps MP2 (standard DAB) however sucks. The break even point for quality on DAB+ is about 128 kbps AAC+. In the mean time I’m sticking with FM as a radio format.
