Ethernet Cabling - Advice Please

The house I have just purchased requires lots of work tobring it up to standard including a full electrical rewire. I am takingadvantage of this to lay other cables including those that will allow me tolink my TV to the internet via its Ethernet socket. Thus far I have used Wifi, but clearly cabled connection would be better, especially as my router will be located upstairs.

Can anyone provide some detailsof what cable I require in order to get the best performance and what flushmounting plates are needed? Links to relevant wiring diagrams and methods of how to connect would also beappreciated.

Alan I purchased an ethernet cable from amazon and it was a large length, enough to run 30 ft or so, it cost me a fiver. I plugged it into my router which is in kitchen, ran it round my door frames and as it is brown in colour luckily blends with my wallpaper, it is now plugged into my sky box which gives me an internet connection for sky anytime plus. There are new hdmi cables coming onto the market which has ethernet built in. They work in theory by picking up the inetrnet signal and sending it via my cable, back to my tv and onto other plugged in items. however it is still in the early stages at the mo, and I am not sure if the sky box or tivo box can handle this yet

Ethernet over HDMI is not supported at all yet.

For future proofing, I suggest you run Cat 6. If the cable goes outside or in unprotected voids, consider a rodent repelling exterior grade. This is tricky to find in Cat6, but esay in cat5.

Run 2 cables to each point, as this will allow for any failure and also if you decide to run HDMI over Cat5, as the better units require 2 cables.

Steve4800 – the HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC) whilst a ‘good’ idea is a dead duck, there are zero devices on the market which support it; it only takes a minute to consider the product managers point of view, would you want to be responsible for all of those IP tech support calls the system is likely to generate!

HDMI :: Manufacturer :: HDMI 1.4 :: HDMI Ethernet Channel

alan33 – lots of conduit is good, lots of cable is good and lots of cable in conduit is probably best of all; though not always achievable on a budget.

Ask the Mods to move your Thread over to the Custom Installation Forum – you’ll get lots of good DIY'er and Pro advice from the boys and girls who wire up houses on a daily basis.

Take some time to think through how you want to use the house and what you want out of your Entertainment system – that’ll give you a start on designing the infrastructure; at this stage forget about what specific kit you want just think though how you want to use and operate the system.

Probably best to use the 'Report Post' button and ask the Mods that way!

Whilst we are on this topic. Is it possible to run CAT 5/6 and mains power cables via the same holes in wooden joists. If not, what about coaxial and CAT 5/6. I will be rewiring the house and trying to be sensible and economic in terns of routing the various cables.

COAX and Cat5/6 you can share space between Mains should not run parallel to data closer than 2" and ideally not at all if you have to cross do so at 90 degrees.... one tip is cut the max holes the joist will support in the safe zones. very very hard to open them up later.......

Uk info only

Guidance in terms of electrical wiring is 300mm section 528 of the wiring regs deals with this, that said it is hard to pin the 300mm down to a specific regulation you will get hung um in emc standards.

Less than 100mm is considered very bad practice in terms of electrical wiring and separation of banded circuits

I never install closer than 300mm and cross at 90degrees where necessary careful planning achieves a lot !
