Multi-Room Setup

Ok, first post and really not sure which forum to go for so apologies in advance.

I'm currently trying to piece together an AV solution for a new build house (yet to be built, so really anything is possible cabling wise etc.)

Basically, the client doen't know what he wants, but isn't going to pay for something he views as ridiculous - Crestron not an option.

Basically, he wants multiroom audio around the house (probably 8 different rooms), plus some kind of distribution system for video.

He wants Sky HD in several rooms, but doesn't want the boxes in the rooms. One option at the moment is to rack mount them in the basement.

I've always played around with HTPCs etc. and I sort of feel that TVs with Sky and a separate audio system is a bit passé. Is it possible to have some kind of central media server, linked to the TVs to provide web access, on-demand video and stuff like that?

Always happy to talk to a fellow (ex in my case) VX220 owner.

It is really down to budget as to what is possible, encoding and streaming is still very expensive especially if the client is already discounting stuff he views as pointless.

Can DF stuff record and stream?

The only really way I would look at it is using the commercial IP Streamers from Netstreams / DigiLinX.

can't seem to see a request for a "record and stream" in the initial post :S
