We are in the process of converting a Steading/croft to be our home. We will be looking to install a multiroom type system in the building in the future, however, because of the nature of the build we’re aware that the cabling needs to be run now, during the build, as we realise that these systems can be challenging to retrofit and that the cost in our case would be prohibitive.
This is what I propose, any advice is greatly appreciated.…….
Wish list: -
- Audio in 5 zones, 3 with sub zones.
- Video in three zones (HD if possible)
- Integration of existing NAS drive (ReadyNAS NV+) as my audio/video server - it currently stores our audio/movies, photos and data at present.
- Scaleable so we can start small and add bits on later (one room at a time)
- Additional Data system running network cable from service cupboard to study/home office
Budget is key hence why only doing the wiring just now.
Type of System: -
We want to make sure that we’ll cover the majority of systems.
We are thinking of wiring along the lines of (but not specifically) an Opus 600 or Systemline S6 system. We want to make sure that the cabling infrastructure is in place so that we don’t limit options when choosing a system in the future. A scaleable system would be good. We’ll want to start with at least the lounge. The OPUS system looks ideal esp with the forthcoming VMX500.
Current situation: -
At the moment the electricity and telephone are planned to enter the building at the service cupboard. This is where I propose to house the multiroom equipment, (as well as broadband router/existing NAS drive etc).
Building scheduled to be wind and watertight by end of October so we need to move fast!
Basic Wiring : -
I envisage that each room will have a small powered amplifier and control panel (like in the Opus System).
I am planning to get the electrician to run CAT6 and separate DC power cable (homemade BTC1 cable?) from the under stairs cupboard to each zone amp.
From each zone amp I will run CAT6/DC to each control point. I will also run speaker cable from the amplifier location to the proposed speaker location(s) in each room.
Video Wiring: -
In the rooms that will also have Video I will run CAT 6 (future HD upgrade) and composite from service cupboard to where the TV will be situated. I only plan to have the TV/video capability in three rooms (main lounge, master bedroom, 2nd lounge), but may wire it up for more (2nd bedroom, study)
We will also consider running CAT5 and coax from key points around the building to the service cupboard for future provision of CCTV/IP Cameras.
Does anyone have an opinion? Will this wiring plan cover me for most options?
As I say, any guidance is appreciated!!
