Sound system for a Bar/Resturaunt??

Hey Guys,

I am looking to install a sound system into a Bar/resturaunt with multiple sources:
  • iPod dock for background music during the day.
  • PA system for announcments
  • Sky sound feed for sporting events
  • DJ feed for the night time.
What size system would you recommend? Its not going to be a night club but it needs some punch at night.

I am just seeking some advise as to what system to use for the distribution.

What is the industry standard gear to use for this setup? I cannot find any info on the net to help me out. Please help!

We will probably need a bit more info with regards to the size of your venue, number of people, also what are you trying to achieve with the DJ? Just backgroud or more than that, if you want people to 'connect' to the music then you still need some reasonable sound levels of a good sound quality.

I am from a pro background before I got into domestic, but we still use many pro brands. You should look at Funktion one loudspeakers, XTA processing and MC2 amplifiers. Formula Sound mixers (do not cost cut here, Allan and Heath should be minimum). Using an iPod is OK, just make sure you make sure people use wav or lossless formats, also make sure you OWN the material on it and pay your licence fee for digital music.

For source selection have a look here.

Dupe...

PS. Where are you based?

The size is one room 40 feet by 36 feet.

They are on a really tight budget with this, any ideas?

If the budget is tight, you will probably be looking at a high number of small satalite speakers to give even coveage. You could add in sub output sockets so additional equipment can be hired in for special events. A bit of though to the design and you should be able to do something which gives good background music performance and is flexible for DJ use etc. You can also build in firealarm / noise limits if needed by the council.

Dupe...

PS, how tight is the budget <10k?

Yea, less than 10K. Nightmare or what!

What gear would you suggest.

I know I sound like a bit of a dunce here but I am from a domestic home cinema/multiroom background and this is new territory for me.

Re: Sound system for a Bar/Resturaunt??

What needs to be included in the overall price, decks, CD, iPod dock, radio, mixer, amps, speakers, sky, screens, cables and labour?

Do they have Sky already, this will be around £1000 - 1200 / month for that venue + £30 / month for HD!

Dupe...

Re: Sound system for a Bar/Resturaunt??

Its not really a nightclub at all its a restaurant first and a music bar second, therefore it doesn’t need to be a massive sound system just a bar with a dj.

To be included:
  • Amps
  • Speakers
  • iPod dock
  • PA System
  • All in one Dual CD mixer
  • Cabling for sound system
  • Cabling for future screens
  • Labour
The guy has said 2K but I know that is a little ambitious.

I am fine with the cabling and the screens but its just what piece of equipment I need to distribute the iPod, pa system and dj audio through the same (pref in ceiling) speakers. And what the minimum speaker size to use.

Re: Sound system for a Bar/Resturaunt??

Thats a very tight budget, i'd try and give them flexibility and upgradability so when the place starts doing well (hopefully because of the music) the owner has some chance to come back for more.

For basic music try the EV Evids, Hornydragon has used them and thinks they are pretty good for the price. They come is loads of versions, here. I'd go for the 100V versions as it saves you worrying about impedance etc.

Then look at something like this to drive them. You can also add a remote volume behind the bar.

Cable for subs etc so when the owner is ready simpey add another power amp and some subs.

If this is still too much for the budget you are going to have to have to take a trip to richer sounds and get some JBL control 1s (not the proper versions mind) and a big hiFi amp, not ideal and likely to cause you probs longer term. 2k is sooooo low.....

Dupe...

Re: Sound system for a Bar/Resturaunt??

Jeez your braver than me! I wouldn't of taken that lot on for £2k lol.

You will just look for 100v speakers now as aposed to low impedance. I use 100v systems in shops, hotels etc. But i must admit i just normally use TOA as there one of the biggest suppliers of 100v thats around. The good thing about 100v is that each speaker has a wattage tap so you can restrict the speaker to say 3W, 6W, 15W and 30W. This makes it very flexable for upgrading and adding more speakers. I would have a look at the EV Evids speakers dj-dulux was recommending as the TOA's I use are ok and sound ok on installs I have done but I dare say theres better out there for the money. However I do know that TOA go all the way up to stadium equipment so they maybe able to come up with some kind of package for you....probs not for £2k though lol
