Video Door Phone Wiring Help

Hi,

Not sure if this is the correct location for this post but......
I have bought a video door phone entry system and wanted some advice on how to wire it as i've never done this before.

It is for 4 flats and has 4 separate handsets and one main door camera.

Firstly here is a pic of the back of the front door console(it also has 4 sockets to plug the handsets into, not in pic) :

this is one of the wires that goes into the console:

This is one of the wires that comes from the handset(to console)

and this is the back of the handset where the above wire plugs into
Each handset has a seperate power adapter:

This is the wiring diagram:

OK, pictures over

I would like to know a few of things

1)On the back of the console there are 4 wires, two black for door open(i wont be using this) and a red and blue which on the wiring diagram say go to 12v DC. How do I wire this back to the mains? Do i need some sort of adapter? Also what type of wire should I use?

2)The cable for the handsets has an extra green wire(5 wires), can i power the handsets from this so I dont need to use the external power supplies? the reason i ask is on the back of the handset on the 4th pic shows D12v.
If I am able to do this would I need to run extra cable aswell as the 4 wire cable I am already running?

3)What is the best way to join my 4 wire cable to the ends of the cable above? Solder something else?

Sorry if this is a bit long winded, but any help would be hugely appreciated

Thanks very much

Re: Video Door Phone Wiring Help

phew where to start lol.

Right I think you may need to post a little more info, it's hard to picture without the instruction manual which shows various different schematics. Anyways here we go, In answer to your questions.....

1) By the looks of things you need to purchase a 12v AC to DC Adapter capable of 160Ma. Any electrical wholesaler you ue will be able to supply you with one or if you need one same day pop along to your local Maplins or RS components and they will supply you with one. For such a low power requirement a little 'brick' type adapter will be fine and will probably come with a 4mm plug on. You would just make note of the polarity then chop the plug off and wire it into a little 5amp connector block and join to your cables from the console following the diagram to make sure you get the polarity correct.

2) Looking at the cable that goes into your handset it's the red cable that goes to the 12v pin on your little connector so you wouldn't be able to use the green connector as 12v. The green cable seems to be labled as 'D' at a guess this might mean 'Drain' and will be used to get rid of any static noise etc. If the handsets have seperate power supplys do you have them? I'm slightly confused as your handset pic shows 2 plugs with exactly the same wiring configuration...does one go to the console and one to the psu's?

3) Just wire them into a 5amp connector block.

The long and short of it is you really need to call in an installer!! Even any decent electrical firm worth there salt will be able to tackle a door entry system. If you get your choice in power supply wrong or wire something incorrectly you stand the chance of frying out the circuit boards inside your console and or handsets. If you post the make and model number so people can have a look at the instruction/install manual it should answer all your questions.

Re: Video Door Phone Wiring Help

Hi, thanks very much for you help.

I have managed to get this working now,
I was testing the system prior to installing using one monitor and the main console and couldnt get it to work.
After much head scratching I thought "let me try with two monitors" all of a sudden it powered up and worked fine. It turns out the wire (pictured above) was faulty, so when i plugged in a different unit it worked. I have connected up all four monitors now and it works fine. (main unit powered by the monitors)
I also went back to the person I bought if from who was nice enough to send me the "chinglish" instructions. The D is to unlock the door. The system can also be powered from the main console(the red/blue Wires on the console) all I need to do is change the jumper settings.

Thanks again for your help.
