Toshiba CRT 32ZP48 - purple/discoloured screen

Hi there,

I have just emigrated from UK to NZ. Our UK stuff we shipped finally arrived yesterday and I set up the TV (Toshiba 32ZP48) straight away. Unfortunately the picture is badly discoloured.

The once blue DVD startup screen is now Purple along the middle, and is especially bad at the edges. When playing a DVD, the picture is accordingly awful, but it's more like it's missing a colour than making this area purple.

Is it terminal? If anyone knows what could cause this, can I get it repaired?

Many thanks

Re: Toshiba CRT 32ZP48 - purple/discoloured screen

If the set has been roughly handled it's possible the internal shadowmask in the crt has slipped...the crt would need replaced...not economical to repair.
Or...the degauss positor is faulty or dry-jointed.
You'd need to call in a local TV repairman and get a proper diagnosis.

HI

Hmmm....puzzled! I would have thought a UK telly in NZ does not work.....unless it's multi-system of course.

As regards your other problem of the discoloured screen, it does sound on the face of it there is a degaussing fault. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you it is only the posistor.

I wonder if the earth's magnetic field would cause problems? Seeing as the set was designed to operate in the Northern Hemisphere.

Re: Toshiba CRT 32ZP48 - purple/discoloured screen

HI

Strange as this MAY sound, I know that even the Earth's own magnetic field can even do weird things to a CRT - it's totally batty, but it's true!

Four possibilities:
1) The tube might need a good degaussing.
2) Your posistor is up the creek.
3) The TV was dropped in transit causing the shadow mask to slip.
4) The Earth's magnetic field is to blame.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

Turns out that it isn't terminal, and is repairable for $250 (NZ), which I have claimed on insurance. It got a knock and one of the borads cracked - or something... (will find out from engineer when i get TV back later this week).

Shame, as I was already scoping out what HD panel TV I could get with the full value insurance...!
