Unhappy Toshiba 32YT56- won't turn on at all

Hi all,

My Toshiba 32YT56 about 18 months old and out of warranty has just gone AWOL. I left it recording onto DVD, came back to turn recording function off
on DVD player. Not sure whether TV was off or whether I turned it off.
Came to turn TV on next morning using remote as usual -nothing. Have replaced batteries in remote and checked usual remote buttons are in right place. Unfortunately the TV won't turn on using the set mounted buttons either although power is getting through because the red light turns on at the front of the set.

Wondered if anybody had any ideas before I contact someone to call out to repair it. I vaguely remember something similar happening on a PYE 20" Tv about 6 or 7 years ago. I think it was about £35-40 to repair.

thanks in advance.

Re: Toshiba 32YT56- won't turn on at all

Your set is in standby and would normally turn on either by pressing a number button on the remote or by pressing the prog+ button on the side control panel.
This model has a child lock feature which when activated locks out the side-mounted controls and means that the set can only be switched on from standby by using the remote control...what you need to do is establish if the remote control is working and actually sending a signal...try pressing a button on the remote while holding it close to a radio tuned to the medium waveband or if you have a camcorder point the remote at the lens while looking through the LCD viewfinder...you should see the infra-red light pulsing...if you see this or hear the pulses on the radio you can be confident that the remote is working...in which case there is a fault preventing the TV from switching on.

Red face Re: Toshiba 32YT56- won't turn on at all

Jaycee,

many thanks for your reply. I'm hoping that you may have cracked the problem for me. After following your advice regarding the remote control pointed at a MW radio it seems that my remote probably is faulty. I tried the same thing with another remote and lo and behold I could hear the noises you mention. Took those working batteries out and put them in my Toshiba remote to no effect! What makes me even more convinced is that thinking about it, over the past 5 or 6 weeks the range of the remote seemed to weaken from 12-13 ' down to about 10-11'. I had to lean forward with my arm outstretched from my normal seating position for it to operate. I just assumed that the batteries must be getting low.

The remote seems to be a sealed unit or at least I don't want to force it. I'm presuming that the circuit board has a crack or something (two young children). The Toshiba ref. is CT-874. Could you (or anybody else) recommend a supplier and do you know whether a compatible is available at a lower cost. Unfortunately I do tend to use most of the buttons and therefore couldn't manage with one of these 'basic' essentials only type remotes.

I'm going to do a bit of surfing now to see what i can find out. Once again many thanks for your help. I'll report back once i've got a bit further.

karlo.

It does sound as though the remote is gubbed.
Googling Toshiba CT-874 (and ticking the UK box) should bring up a few UK suppliers.
