34HD82 lighter strip down center of screen

I have a Toshiba 34HD82. It's a couple years old, outside of the warranty. As soon as I got it, I noticed a lighter strip about 1inch wide running directly down the center of the screen. It is most prominent, or most noticeable on moving, single color images- a camera pan across a green golf course or football field or blue sky for example.

I called Toshiba and they had some service guys come out who said they couldn't see it but would take it to the shop to look at it. Unfortunately, that was going to take a month or more and we were about to move at the time, so nothing has been done with it.

I know others have experienced the same problem with this set, but I've never seen an explanation of what's causing it. Does anyone have an idea? Any clue if it's something that could be fixed for cheaper than a couple hundred? I've read that people have had a similar problem around the edges of screens and that loosening some screws on the tube a turn can correct it. Is that something I should give a try? Thanks.
