Reasonable TV lifespan & compensation?

I've had a Sharp 28JW-73H Widescreen TV for just over three years, during which time it has never been in any way misused or abused; I have always taken very good care of it.

A few weeks ago it developed a fault where the brightness and contrast would randomly adjust themselves up and down, and often a strong flicker would also show on screen. I took the set to a service centre listed on Sharp's website, who told me that it required a new tube, and this work would cost me in excess of £800 - that's £500 more than the price of the set when I bought new.

I think that a lifespan of 3 years for £300 television set is totally unacceptable - do other people agree, or is this what I should expect? The set is out of its warranty period, what does anyone think my chances are of getting some kind of recompense from Sharp?

Quite good if you contact them and explain the situation nicely but don't be fobbed off.
You have rights under the sale of goods act.

Really? I was expecting a barrage of replies telling me I had no chance of getting anything from them.

Could you briefly explain what rights you refer to please, as I am not clued up with the Sale of Goods Act.

Do a search of this forum using "sale of goods act" as the search term and pick the "advanced search" option and this "CRT Televisions" forum as the forum to search...read up on the posts and that will give you plenty of ammunition to approach Sharp with.
Good luck.
