Thanks: Gave 1, Got 0 | Samsung WS32z419D -CRT
Hi, I have just replaced my trusty Thomson 32 CRT with the
Samsung WS32z419D. I wanted a CRT with freeview and the slimfit certainly fit the bill. I have read the varoius problems that people have encountered with this set but I want to give it a try. However I nearly cancelled the order because of the catalogue of disasters I had with delivery.
any way it's here but a man is coming to connect/tune. What will he do?
I also have a few questions for the forum
Can I add speakers to it?
Can I tune in the five terrestial channels seperately?
And what can I do about the freezing of the channels?
Look forward to your assistance.

| - I suppose that's the polarised nature of these boards.
You've got your 'av fans' but then again I reckon some people came here to begin with cos they had problems and googled their TV set looking for help.
Not so many go on-line to sing the praises of their kit.....and from the look of these boards most of those of us with a good '419 are too busy enjoying them to be writing long screeds about how great theirs' are.
.....but seeing as you asked Quote: |
a man is coming to connect/tune. What will he do?
| - Probably just access the built-in 'plug in & play' menu and get the TV to sort itself out with tuning, it's pretty easy stuff.
The only bit someone might call a 'complicated' bit is sorting the analogue channels once they're tuned in to the correct order which isn't really (follow the manual and it's easy if not quite so intuitive).
The digi stuff sorts itself. Quote: |
Can I add speakers to it?
| - Yes....but as part of a surround system.
It has stereo audio outputs which you would use to hook up to your amp or an active stand-alone surround-sound system like the Goodmans GCH50 stuff Currys were including gratis in the deal a wee while back. Quote: |
Can I tune in the five terrestial channels seperately?
| - I haven't tried this because there really isn't a need with the auto set-up.
I know you can add digital channels separately and you can fine tune so I would expect you could do so & probably without any great difficulty at all. Quote: |
And what can I do about the freezing of the channels?
| - Luckily I don't have this problem so I can't advise.
I am fortunate to be one of those with a great set.
It might not look like it from these boards but we do exist!
Whatever very few geometry problems my set has are very hard to spot and tiny (I'll put some pics up soon to show).
I really rate the digital freeview (my neighbour couldn't even get a picture with a freeview set-top box nevermind the beauty of a picture I get).
I have no weird colour patches, no bulges, no odd lines running down the screen, no loud buzzing and on something like the Sky or BBC 'news ticker' you can just make out a little blur right at the extreme edges.
It looks really lovely, vivid sharp colours and IMO it's a very stylish set (in black which I much prefer) too.
I paid £479 for the set thanks to a £20 off voucher (thanks Allen!), got free delivery as well (worth another £19.99 off) and I've sold the Goodmans surround sound stuff Currys threw in free on ebay knocking another £50 off.
In my book that = 'Bargain' with a capital 'B'.
I'm happy as the proverbial.

the samsung ws32z419d is the tv im interested in at the moment.
i saw it for the first time today in currys and was very unimpressed
the picture was dull and the background was very blurry but saying that
the feed they were using was quite bad.
i had a play around with the settings but it made no difference
i will be going back in the next few days with my dvd player so hopefully that will make a difference in picture quality.

I have just had to return my samsung 419D :-(
A TV with great potential but too many flaws for primetime.
The first problem applies to all 419Ds according to Currys Mastercare and Samsung. There is a hardware/software problem that reverses the left/right audio channels from an HDMI source.
The second problem was the discolouration in the top right side of the screen, large purplish blob which showed particuarly badly on a red background.
Other problems encountered by other buyers including noisy transformers and bad geometry.
The one that finally killed it for me was Samsung's support desk. They wanted to take my brand new Sammy away for an indefinite period without the courtesy of a loaner. At this point I was very nervious about 'loaning' my set to Samsung for an indefinite period meaning my warranty was expiring and I would lose the recourse of getting a refund from Currys.
Anyway after calling Samsung support again, I decided I did not want to spend the next 12 months arguing with Samsung as my TV spends weeks away getting repaired, so took Samsung's advise and returned it to Curries and got a full refund. (Curry's Mastercare now acknowlege that ALL Sammy 419Ds have a problem that require a full refund)
OBTW - Trading Standards have taken up this issue and have written to DSG and Samsung UK informing them that this TV is not of merchantable quality.
Damn shame - so much potential, so many problems.....

That is bad news for Samsung. I'm very curious how they will react!! Quote: |

| True, but I still hope Samsung will get the quality problem under control.

Hi gixxerman,
I'm glad you made good use of the money off voucher (see link below). I too have a set that I'm perfectly happy with (419D). A tiny bit of geometry problem, a little blur in the corners (but much better than my father-in-law's 32" crt).
The colours are fantastic and I love the look of the set. Mine is staying.
I'm interested how you sold you speakers on eBay. I want to do the same. I have an account already. What did you use as a starting price ?
Cheers,
Allen

Thank you very much.

| - I started it at £35 (p&p was a whopping £25 with 22kgs on Parcelforce).
Luck of the draw though, when I was placing mine I watched a set go for £79 & thought whey-hey! sadly mine didn't go quiite as well but I can't really grumble.
In fact with it being a gratis bonus I'm
The next cheapest I could have got was a '409 from empire at £450 (with delivery here to Northern Ireland) so you can see what is effectively £400 (or even £370 at empire's delivery charge) for a brand new ws HD-ready TV I'm really pleased with I honestly am |

Recently got this set but due to decorating the women of the house says it isn't to be opened until all the work is done.
Decided to still order even after I read of the HDMI issues on here, hopefully mines won't suffer from any picture gremlins.
I think its a really nice set with good features for an excellent price, my Philips 28" 4:3 TV was £965 ten years ago!

I to thought about this tV (please see other post). But decided not to, i know its cheap and the pic can be good. On thinking about it i thought why should i stump up money for somthing that samsung know is faulty. The left and right sound output being swopped over is just a farce. I have HDTV through telewest so this was a big problem for me. But good luck to you, though i purchased a LG 27" lcd in the end and have to say am well chuffed with it . Though i have just seen the 32" going for £640, always the way.

I'm much more likely to get a decent surround sound system and hook my HTPC up to that via digital coax, and turn off the TV sound completely. So for me I didn't see this as a problem.

If you get an older set, and it still has the problem, then you can get it fixed with a firmware upgrade.
It's a stupid mistake, but not the end of the world....... Quote:

This seems to be a positive thread so I will post an update here. I am also very pleased with the Samsung 419 at the moment no significent geometry problems (The only noticable part is a slight over-scan on the left edge) All Horizontals a nice and straight and the verticals are good too. I do get the wied parts of faces moving independantly but only it seems strangly on am BBC news.
No noticable bluring in corners altough a very slight reduction in pixel definition in the corners with SD Television.
On DVD in progressive scan the picture is tremendous I do not have HDMI outputs as yet so cannot test this.
I will post picture at a later date.
For the money its good enough and the key reason I bought it its HDMI ready very good value for money and no deepper from back to front than my ancient Sony set.

I have had a good look at the tv yesterday at a curry's store and it does look very stylish and the pictures looked quite good and clear with a very slight bend on both sides of the screen, but I'm still quite impressed for such a reasonable price. I'm gonna wait for a while and see if more news comes up regarding the various issues.... and if not hope then probably go for an lcd. |
