What is TINT's function?

What is this and how should it be set?

I have searched and been through loads of posts but I havent seen any that explain what it does and how you should go about setting it.

Also in lots of posts most people seem to hav it set to zero!
Is it not used?

"Tint" is used to correct colour problems inherent in the American NTSC colour (color ) system.

The UK PAL system is self-correcting and so "Tint" is not required.

So watching a ntsc region 1 dvd on a pal tv doesnt require any tweaking of TINT?

So why do they put in the menu?

Because the TV itself switches to NTSC video mode when a region 1 DVD is played.

Indeed. Tint should only affect NTSC signals. And, in fact, it should be wholly unnecessary to adjust it away from its default or centre position when playing (say) DVDs. Tint correction is only necessary on received broadcast TV in NTSC format to correct signal/reception issues.

Yes indeed, I should have made that clearer in my original answer.

(Technically it's due to differential phase distortion of the sub-carrier. )

Incidentally, for those new to this technobabble, NTSC means Never Twice the Same Color!
