Do I go for:

1. Analogue only set from Comet £449
2. Freeview set from empiredirect £403 + £15 delivery
3. Analogue only set from clubstores £396
4. Freeview set from digiuk £480 + free delivery

I've NO experience with buying from any of these stores. Any guidance would be great.

Take care.
I have bought and returned the set from Comet at £449. There was no fuss at all with them though I did lose my £17 delivery fee.

You're probably aware that under the distance selling regs you are entitled to return your TV for any reason as long as you notify the retailer in writing or by email within 7 days.
However I would recommend reading the terms and conditions of any retailer you choose to buy from before placing your order.

Things to ask them before ordering:

1. If I try it and don't like it, will the item be classed as 'used' and subject to a restocking fee?

e.g I bought a TV from PRC direct for £700 and wanted to return it. They charge a hefty 10% 're-stocking' fee for anything that's been unpacked. If the retailer says there will be a fee but doesn't disclose the amount, phone them and ask them how much it will be first!

Comet don't charge a re-stocking fee.

2. Will you pick the TV up from me. if so how much does that cost?

e.g. PRC direct insist that you return the item to them at your cost. A 58 kg TV will be expensive!

Comet will collect the item but you wont be refunded on your £17 delivery fee.

impressions of this tv

I've got the samsung television and got sky hd yesterday. A few impressions:

The picture quality in hd is excellent. You can see why the telly presenters don't like it - every broken capillary is reproduced in loving detail - I didn't realize how old David Gower had got until I saw him on Sky Sports HD yesterday! The BBC HD preview is stunning - especially the Galapagos segment. It's just a shame there's so little real content right now. Trust me, if you've not got a Sky HD box yet then you're not missing much. There's a handful of channels and they all feel very experimental.

On the downside, the telly flickers like crazy when running hd. This is just standard 50Hz flicker, but I've gotten used to 100Hz for the last six years. This telly works at 100 Hz when running SD through SCART so there's no flicker there, but the flicker is very noticeable on HD. Having said that, the picture quality blows away anything I've seen on LCD at any price, except maybe the £3.5K Philips 40" job in John Lewis on Oxford Street. The Samsung has none of that irritating judder when panning across the crowd in the Bradford v. Swansea play-off.

Also, there's no doubt that it suffers from the geometry problems that people have mentioned. The letters "ss" in "Press" in the box in the top right corner of the BBC News 24 site are very blurred. Oddly enough, it's a whole lot better when running through HD. In fact it's fine. Frankly, even at SD it's so minor I can't get worked up about it.

That is not so odd. There are separate geometry settings etc. for every resolution it can show on the screen.

buzz?

It flickers like any 50 Hz television. If you're not bothered by that then you're fine. What buzz? Mine doesn't buzz! I can hear the hard disk drive whirring away in the sky hd box, but nothing at all from the samsung.

OK I thought the buzzing noise was a common problem though the geometry issue seems to vary on every TV. Knowing me I'll probably get one of the worse affected ones

How heavy btw ?

Well that's good news... I have been waiting for someone with this tv to get SKY HD. Glad to hear it is really good. I have this TV and pay day wont come quick enough so I can order SKY HD... I dread to think when I will get it installed! I know it hasnt got a lot of HD content yet, but I havent got SKY+ either so I am kind of killing 2 birds!
On a completely diff story, I was completely surprised yesterday when I was in a local small Tesco...they had a 32" Philips LCD, it was £800.00 through an upscaling DVD player and it looked like what I would call true HD...it honestly looked that good. Point of the story... maybe thinking about getting a half decent upscalling dvd for the moment!

I tried to view the 1080i/720p geometry settings via the service menu but dont have access (Maybe because I dont have an HD source yet)

Has anyone tried amending the PAL geometry settings yet ?

Were you able to open the service menu at all?

Hi there, for anyone that is interested I have noted down the service menu, I know there is a link on this forum for the service menu manual but it is not 100% the same as this set.
To get onto service menu: "In stand-by mode: prss INFO-MENU-MUTE-POWER (on remote control) doesnt always pop up with service menu first time, do it a couple of times.

Hey Stooahee,

Thanks for those Service Menu settings - now we need some advice on if they can improve the geometry. I suspect the blurring can't be affected, but maybe the 'corner bending' could be reduced (mine is only top right).

This buzzing is annoying me now, I am thinking about swapping out the set with Comet. Stooahee, is your set silent? Don't recall reading any comments about buzzing from you...

If they all buzz to a greater or lesser degree then I would be reluctant to return the set in case I got a worse one back!!...and I thought it was hard enough deciding whether to buy it or not in the first place

How obvious are the geometry issues? Is it something that only the AV enthusiasts would notice? I have a 7 year old 21 inch sony tv and havn't noticed anything wrong with it!

I am not an enthusiast but I want a tv that looks good and is compatible with HD equipment if and when i can afford them so i think this tv is suitable for me.

If my understanding is correct the number of HDMI means the number of different connections for HD compatible equipment? like sky hd or xbox 360, how many does this tv have?

sorry if i have the technical terms wrong

Hi all.

I've been following this thread for a while now and i'm still split between this tv and the toshiba 32wl66.

So i was wondering, has anyone had the chance to compare the samsung to a LCD TV using a xbox360

As i've not seen many posts of the PQ using a xbox360 and it would be my only source of HD.

Cheers.
