ITV1 on widescreen tv

The chelsea match now on ITV1 (Sky digital) has 2 black bars down either side of the screen. I have noticed that this seems to happen everytime a football match is on ITV1 or ITV4. Why does this happen? Can I do anything to fix it?

Thanks

I am having this problem, I have just managed to connect my LG dvd recorder to my Daewoo tv with built in f/v, (many thanks to JayCee) who helped me out, all chans are fine except itv, when I had my external f/v box on its ok, you can set sreeen option in the menu, think I had it as centre cutout, and all stations never change format, all always filled the screen, I set the tv to full scren and the bars are still there , any ideas people

Annoying as this is, i dont wanna go back to hooking the external f/v box up again, all though it had the advantage of being able to watch on side, and tape another.

Cheers

Temporarily set your Sky+ box to 4:3 mode and you can then stretch / otherwise abuse the image however you like.

What you are seeing is the correct behaviour for a 16:9 system though, and I wouldn't change it personally.

foreign tv cameras are usually to blame for the black bars you are seeing, you dont tend to get them with sky and bbc!

I set my external f/v to 4.3 and centre cutout, solved the prob, but it`s a pain to have to fiddle about just for one thing.

Glad it helped. I still don't think it's a problem though - it's the correct way of displaying a 4:3 image

This is one of those occasions when it's better to switch to terrestrial analogue (if you still can) so that the automatic circuit can fill the screen.

So much for progress!

It is always the same with foreign broadcasts in the Champions league, i just set my sky+ settings to 4.3 then change back to 16.9 as soon as the game has finished !

Shame they lost eh

Yeah I have problems with the BBC on most of their sports broadcasts as well, although last weekends 6 nations was okay for a change, and it was proper widescreen as well.
