100 Hz screen degradation?

Hi,

I'm a newbie to all the home cinema stuff.

I was looking to buy a 29" TV. I have read the discussions about the differences between 50 Hz and 100 Hz sets. But I still have some questions:

1. Is the problems of traces (for example, when watching football) sorted out on 100 Hz screens?
2. Does the picture quality tends to degrade faster on 100 Hz sets than the 50 Hz?
3. What other major flaws does 100 Hz screens have?

Well, the "smearing" effect that can be seen on some 100hz sets affects usually fast moving/panning images - so yes - the football example you quote can suffer as well as fast moving/scrolling text.

However, I think it depends from set to set as to how well it handles the 100hz processing - some look worse than others.

I personally have a Sony KV32CS70 100hz set. This is a basic 100hz picture, which on Freeview to my eyes looks fine. Sometimes fast moving text smears slightly, but it honestly isn't that bad on my set (and I am really, really picky when it comes to TV pictures!).

50hz sets are still, in my opinion, perhaps, slightly better. Ok, so you do get a little more flicker with them (actually slightly noticeable after watching 100hz picture for many months) - but generally, you wouldn't really notice unless you compare the two side by side for a long while.

I have not heard of the picture quality degrading on a 100hz set any quicker than a standard 50hz set.

If you are going to go for a 100hz set (and, as I say, I am very pleased with my Sony), do try and go for one without all the fancy processing - this just tends to make the picture too soft - feature films end up looking too un-natural (almost like they are shot on video tape sometimes!)

I'd buy a 50Hz set that passed RGB directly to the tube with as little processing as possible.

You could also consider a JVC HV-28D40, or a JVC HV-32D40. These are 75Hz which is intended to negate the smearing and flicker problem inherent in 100Hz and 50Hz TVs. I have one and am pretty pleased with it. Just a thought. Good luck in your search.

To be honest I did not think it was, but was told by another forum member that I was wrong. So I can't say definitively one way or the other, I can only say that the HV-32D40 is and I have been very pleased with this particular model. As I said, good luck in your search.

Right now I'm pretty convinced to go for a simplier 50 Hz set (as it will be used by my parents and for TV watching only).
