Best 28" CRT?

I am after a new 28" CRT TV - am working away from home in a small flat and they haven't given me a TV. The specs I require:

- 28" CRT (no bigger as it will double as a Kitchen TV when I get it home)
- Widescreen
- Analogue Tuner only (I am already awash with DVB-T boxes!)
- Minimium of 1 RGB Enabled Scart Socket
- Is not a Philips model (I like TVs to work more than a year!)

...however the most important point is that it has decent, solid black side bars when viewing 4:3 material, i.e. not light grey ones that look pants when watching old TV.

I dont think there is such a thing as the "best 28 crt" as there as too many variables and personal preferences to consider.

I'm looking for a 28" widescreen for my mum (she's finally going widescreen...lol) and find myself in the same dilemma.

All i can say is find a large Comet type Superstore and go see them for yourself. I did just that - if its a main store they will have them all lined up which makes it relatively easy to see which you prefere. I have to say there's not much in it - especially when you look at the top CRT manufacturers sets.

PS: I much prefere 50hz sets. Hate all that silly - not to mention highly visible - digital processing nonsense too.

PPS: My Philips 32" widescreen is still going strong after 5 years !!

I highly recommend the Sony 28HX15, as it has everything you require, and most importantly has very good picture quality (imo Sony tubes have the best picture quality). I don't think you will be disappointed with this TV.

If you want it with a 'free' 5 year guarantee, John Lewis have it in stock for £299. Note, the one in John Lewis doesn't come with a stand.

I too heartily recommend the Sony HX15.

I sent the Sony KV28HX15 back due wonky black bands when watching wide screen movies, the picture was slightly squashed on the left, very noticeable to me, also the contrast range is poor highlights are blown out

TV news graphics show up the poor geometry

Definitely take a look first, they have them in comet, tesco, and asda you can change channel with buttons on the right side

For those of who recommend the Sony Sony HX15 mabye you should have pointed out the spots of lights that appear then disappear a few seconds later when there is a bright object in a dark scene. It creates a halo like effect around the bright objects. This was not a defect as i tested the model on show at the Sony Centre and it displayed the same so it is a design fault.

Did you play with picture settings?

Sony TVs are set up to look very bright - you need to change from LIVE to PERSONAL
