JVC HV-28D40 resolution?
I know TV's are measured in lines and not pixels, but I was wondering whether this 1080i TV can display a 1080i image(1920x1080) without losing detail i.e. what is the true resolution?
I tried to contact JVC techinical support but they could not answer the question!

Well I'm seriously tempted by this. I've just returned a samsung slimfit because of terrible geometry problems, so thought it'd be a good idea to ask a few questions about this before I buy another lemon...
1) 480p NTSC & PAL, will it do both ok?
2) Anyone know if it has any geometry problems?
3) Is the PQ good?
4) 1080i input, good for SKY HD when it comes out? Post above indicates its 900i native, does this mean 1080 gets scaled? I'm not asking for the best HD performance ever, but will it still look pretty good?
5) are there any CRT's which will do 720p??
6) I thought buying a new TV would be relatively easy......
any input appreciated, thanks.

- Yep, 1080i gets scaled to 900i or whatever the resolution of the set is. No CRT HDTV (note, not monitor) can resolve the full 1080i resolution, the closest is Sony's XBR range which is not sold here. It can do 1400x900 whereas most do 800x900.
- CRT monitors can do 720p native like Sony's 24" GDM-FW900 widescreen PC monitor but most CRT HDTVs can accept a 720p input which is scaled to 1080i and the older CRT HDTVs can't accep a 720p signal like JVC's 28P37, 32P37 or 36P38.

Hi Eiji,
You say most are 800x900 resolution. Is that 800 across by 900 down? Surely it is 900 across by 800 down i.e. 900 vertical lines and 800 horizontal lines?

Yes, its 800 horizontal lines by 900 vertical lines so 800x900.
Look at the spec sheet for the Samsung SlimFit on the US Samsung site. It states the max horizontal resolution is 800 lines.
I'm not 100% sure about the vertical lines figure but it isn't the full 1080 either.

I beg to differ...both Samsung and JVC can run their electron guns at 1080i at 50Hz and 60Hz...I believe the shadow masks resolution (number of mask elements) of both sets is pretty standard but since we are talking analog scan the 1080i should look sharper anyway because the elements are not discreet like on a plasma or LCD but raher the scaning gun will draw two lines per element which will blend nicely because phosphor coating is homogenous and there is a constant crosstalk, spill and mixing of neighbouring scan lines and horizontal analog lines...that's why with CRTs the drawbacks of the source material are less visible (hidden better) while on LCDs and plasmas every little lack of quality is evident...try running your PC CRT monitor at a resolution higher than it's nominal dot pitch and you WILL see a higher resolution picture although the number of dots theoretically shouldn't allow for higher res to be noticed...
...as for 800 lines horizontal resolution (if it is indeed so), this reffers to ANALOG resolution and standard TVs have 500 lines of horizontal resolution so this IS higher than your ordinary CRT TV...you'd only get potentially and noticably better picture ona a native 1980x1080 ALIS panel via HDMI...at a hilarious cost...human eye, after all, is not such a precision instrument, especially if you watch something from further away...once you sit back far enough from TV to no longer be able to see the shadowmask, be sure that you will not be able to perceive the resolution difference between 800 and 1980 lines either...
