Loewe Arcada 8784 problem

Hi,
I wonder if one of you experts can advise me.
I have a Loewe Arcada8784, which has been working flawlessly since ca 1997.
I have just been on holiday for a week and when I plugged it in again and switched it on the picture and sound were normal. But there was a low hissing noise comming from the telly, which sounds like you have fallen asleep in front of the telly and wake up to a channel, which is no longer broadcasting. Putting the telly on mute makes no difference to the sound.
To make matters worse after a few minutes I heard a clicking, as if you are trying to ignite your gasoven, which was immedeately followed by a smell of burning. Picture and sound are still ok, but I obviously turned the TV of asap and unplugged it.
Now I know that I will need professional help, but the TV is very heavy and obviously no longer under warranty. I am also having trouble finding a repair service near me, who deals with Lowe TV's. I live in Romford in Essex.
Any ideas as to what my TV's problem is and how I get it fixed ?
I would be very grateful, sorry to be a bit long winded.
Thanks Tina

The symptoms sound like a dry joint or the line output transformer arcing.
All I can suggest is that you keep phoning around for an engineer to take a look and give you a quote.
They do not have to be Loewe dealers or specialists as the transformers are available from various sources to the trade.
If the picture has been good (if you have been happy with it) until this breakdown then repair should be worthwhile.

Thanks Jay, although I have only a vague idea what the above means. Could you explain to me what a dry joint is.
And also is it likely that it will be possible to repair the TV at home ( it's bloody heavy)?
Thanks again
Tina
