Rptv Odd Effect

Hope someone can help. I'm finally getting my replacement Tosh rptv and I'm hoping someone can explain a strange effect that this tv and also other tv's I've seen has.
Watching Master & Commander the other day, I noticed in darker areas such as cloud formations in the storm scene that there was a peculiar swirling effect and a resultant lack of detail, but in other scenes which seemed to be just as dark there was no loss of detail. Very strange ! any ideas about tv, dvd player settings that might account for this ?
