Sorry if this is a stupid question... (screen ratios)

...but we've just got a JVC HV32-P37 and dvd's are played through the PS2 which is connected with an S-Video cable.

I've just noticed that films STILL dont fill the screen! Are films not recorded in 16:9 ? even if i change the settings to "full" or "16:9" , "14:9" , "auto" there is still a black gap along the top and bottom of the picture.

Is it the PS2?.. Thanks in advance - Kev

Films are made in all sorts of shapes. Cinema screens can be altered to all sorts of shapes to match.

TV's come in two shapes and can't be altered.

So - if a film was originally made in a shape that is wider than a widescreen TV, what can we do?

a) stretch it vertically (or squash it horizontally - same thing) to fit. Things would be the wrong shape so that's not such a good idea.

b) fill the height up, and cut of the extreme left and/or right hand sides of the image. So we'd be missing part of the film. Not such a good idea.

c) fit to the width of the screen, and pad out the surplus height with black. Nothing missing, and nothing the wrong shape. So nothing at all wrong, then.
