DVD/TV Help

hi, im having trouble with my TV playing DVDs.
My TV is quite old and only has one scart socket therefore it only has one AV channel.
When i connect my DVD player to it the DVD startup screen appearsboth on my av channel and the rest of my ordinary non av channels. When i open the disc tray and play a dvd the picture and sound glitches on and off until the movie plays and it is fine.
Ill be picking up a new TV in the christmas sales but for now is there any way of solving this?

P.S. im using a decent scart lead and dvd player so i think it is the TV thats the problem.
