I need your help about my 2 year old Sony KV36FS70

Bought this model about 2 and a half years back and whenever you turn it on it makes a very loud grunting noise. The TV is from John Lewis and the engineers keep ensuring me this is normal. It doesn't sound normal!

My worries were increased when a friend told me this is a sign of the tube going! This TV has been like this since new. Has anyone else experienced anything similar.

AKM,

Don't worry, it's totally normal!

It's just the degaussing circuit demagetising the tube.

I agree the sound is not pleasant, but without it you'd end up with rainbows on the picture.

My old Sony used to make the dog jump everytime!

It's difficult to advise on a noise over the internet, however as tg says, it sounds very much like the degauss circuit. It should only do this when switching on at the on/off switch and not bringing it on from standby.

Lynx,

Far be it for a humble TG to query a moderator ( ) but are you sure about this?

I was under the impression that the degaussing circuit operates from standby, since this is how most people leave their TV overnight.

Certainly my old Sony 2982 was like that.

That's what I thought as well, as my Philips seems to degause from standby.

Can someone confirm this?

I had exactly the same tv. From cold turn on at the switch it would make this noise. From stand by it would make it as well but only if it had been in stand by for more than an hour or so. switching it of and then on again would not cause it to degause.

I was commenting on Sony sets. I seem to recall reading an article regarding the degauss circuit only being activated when switching on from the on/off switch. This is consistent with the Sony sets i have in the house. I will sit corrected if the statment is inacurate

Yes, my mother-in-law has one of these.
It makes a loud boing noise which frightens the cat. Followed by a crackle of static.
I can't comment on whether it does this from stand-by, have only ever switched it on from cold.
It's nothing to worry about.

AKM,

Well, we seem to have a slight dispute on the details, but at least we're unanimous on your original question:

DON'T WORRY!

And that's the main thing, isn't it?

Hi I have the Sony KD32DX200. Previously I had a 29inch Sony bought in 1991.
Both make the loud noise(Thud) when switching on from cold.
I don't usually leave the tv in standby, but sometimes when it has been in standy for a while, it will make the loud noise.
I have been assured though that it is a feature of all trinitron tubes.
Incidentally I still have a 25 inch Sony and that does exactly the same !
Hope this helps
