Toshiba 57WH36P-where is the lost weight?

Hi, there!

I am soon receiving my first RPTV: Toshiba 57WH36P.
I have got the feeling that the quality of these sets
have deteriorated rather steeply. But now I am shocked:
From what I have seen Toshiba 57WH36P, had an original
weight of about 94kg, but now they are listed at 79,5kg..!!!

So my question is: What have Toshiba taken away from the set?

And furthermore, perhaps I would be better off to bite the sour apple,
and simply ask for a refund..? Losing money for the shipping costs, I
can live with, but not living with an inferior tele. Recommendations?

First...welcome to the forums.

Not quite sure what you're trying to say with this post....I wouldn't necessarily equate weight with quality in the first place, and a weight of 80kgs isn't exactly lightweight in any case.

To take the example to an extreme,Toshiba could make most of the set out of carbon fibre, and probably halve the weight, and triple the price.

One assumes that you actually tried the set out before buying it,albeit in the confines of a shop setting, and were pleased with what you saw?....if not,it's hard to understand why you purchased "blind" so to speak.

I have one of the older 50Wt29B sets, which also is no lightweight, and when properly set up,gives an excellent picture, and certainly better than many of the lower priced plasmas, and the newer sets have progressive scan and other benefits also.

Thnx.

Well, I thought that was pretty obvious. If 20 or so kilos
are slashed from a tele, at least I, get a bit curious as
to what actually has been changed.

I have based my purchase from what owners of the older
sets have thought: a great tele. I have had no chance of
watching it live, because Toshiba is not available in my country
any longer.

But have the newer sets the same PICTURE quality as the older
ones, that may be the correct way to phrase my question.

As I am from Sweden, I have read the thread where
Lizzard described his purchase of this set. And he mentioned
a weight of 120kg!!! That is of course including the package.
But I have the shipping papers of my Toshiba, same model number,
and there the total weight (incl. pack.) is stated as 80kg....!

So of course I am concerned.

Well....as with all of these things, the choice is yours, the consumer.

If you've read Lizzard's,and other people's comments then you have an independent view on the set you've bought,as well as any other reviews, and hopefully your own experiences from when you tried the set before buying it....you did do that?,and took a few DVD's of your own along for a demo?

What I'm getting at primarily is that if you were happy with the video quality of the set when you tried it,then I am sure from my own experiences with Toshiba RPTV's,and many others here, that you will find the construction more than adequate.

FWIW,Toshiba's site quotes the weight of the 57" model as being 92kg...is it possible the shipping papers are in error?

Oh well...looks like the Uk version is heavier by nearly 10kgs.....difficult to explain that one,and probably best taken up with Toshiba themselves.

Seriously though,in the end,you must decide for yourself whether or not you're happy with this TV,and the only proper way is to look at one, actually working, with one of your own DVD's fed into the set from a DVD player, and not the shop's own video feed, which is usually awful.
Then you can also get a feel for the construction, and quite honestly, when I chose mine,I looked at Sony,Samsung,Thomson, and a load of others, before buying the Toshiba for it's overall quality.....Sony are better looking in some ways, but I didnt feel the picture was any better.

I'm off for dinner now,and I honestly don't think I can offer much more on this,so maybe another user can add his/her comments.

Yes, of course you are quite right.
As you can see in my edited post, Toshiba is
no longer available here in Sweden So I only have
this not yet received set to base my own personal
opinion upon. It would be more convenient not to
unpack the tele though, if I have reason to be
concerned that Toshiba has lowered their quality
ambitions.

The 42'' version weighs 50 kg net., i would suppose that the net weight
of the TV is the stated 79 kg and plus the packaging would be 98 kg,
probably with the stand you would be at 120??

i don't think Toshiba have changed the tv,
maybe Demon or Lizzard can confirm.

If I do decide to accept the set,
I swear to god I will put it on a
bathroom scale and once and for all
get the factual weight.

Then there is the question if the UK sets
differ from the German ones, but probably
not. I simply think they have chosen lighter
materials for the frames, in the more recently
produced specimens.

I don't have this TV anymore as i sold but i can confirm that the German Toshibas are shipped from the factory in U.K.

It's the same model as the one in U.K, no difference.

You can see on the package the TV arrives in that it's made in U.K

I think it's either a error on the German Toshiba site or the U.K, i wouldn't be worried about this, it's an excellent TV but it needs someone who cares about it to make the best out of it.

Don't get scared if you receive the TV and you notice that the picture is tilted and the picture is blurry.....

Probably it's the shipment that caused it.

The weight quoted is the GROSS weight - this is about 90kg. The other weight is the weight of the TV alone. Hope this helps.

Well, I got my new Toshiba yesterday.
Must say I'm extremely pleased with
everything: picture, build quality and
features. Rather surprised that even the
picture was so good right out of the box.
Only lowered the contrast, that was set
at 75% from factory, to 40% and light to
the same value.
Have been watching a few DVD:s so far, and
none of the irritating lines and artefacts
mentioned by other posters.
Really, really pleased!

Because it's so huge, I'm lucky to have a
viewing distance of about 5 meters.
Otherwise it's easy to get lost on this
colossal screen. Everything looks better as
well.

This set is a real bargain at 2380€ including
shipping, from Germany.

Now I'm ready for Stefan Holm, Carolina Klüft and
Christian Olsson to battle it out at the Olympics.

It's great to have this forum at my disposal,
whenever a problem arises. Or to get inspired
from.

Ps. The weight?
net. 78,8kg
incl. package: 94,6kg.

No vertical line on 57WH36P, first time i ever heard of it, must be the WH46 range that got this particular problem.

Good to see that all of your fears about the Tv were unfounded,as many of us had assured you they would be.
Enjoy the view...you'll find that adjusting the convergence as per the user menu is adequate for most people, without resorting to the service menu, and as you've already found, cutting the factory default settings on brightness, sharpness, and contrast to something more useable in the home does help a lot.
