Hi,
If your room is big enough to accommodate a rear projection tv, then I would definitely consider one. Most people on these forums that own one are generally very happy with them. Although problems do still occur, they're not on the same scale as normal tube driven tv's.
They do have their limitations, such as limited viewing angles, the convergance needs periodic adjustment and the image is less sharp than a normal tv, but the advantages are big, potentially high quality pictures.
If you do consider one, it's a good idea to try and get a decent demo of one in action with a high quality source (most RPTV's are very badly setup on the shop floor, and the picture shown doesn't do them justice).
LCD rear projection is also worth considering, although these suffer from not being able to resolve black, meaning that dark scenes in a film can look a bit washed out, with parts of the picture that should be black being resolved as a charcoal grey. Other than that, there is quite a lot to recommend about these sets. There is a link
here to a thread which discusses the new Sony Grand Wega LCD RPTV.
If you find the disadvantages of RPTV don't bother you, then they are worth shortlisting.
Cheers,
Bob.
