Help re-install windows xp

Hello everyone, I am hoping you can help

I have been running in safe mode for awhile now, ok but cannot download camera piccies to my website

So I asked a pc bod for advice, save all my stuff he said then run my system recovery disk that came with the pc

Ok this afternoon, I finally got round to saving files etc and then loaded the disk............................nothing happened except the d drive gave me a list of the files. So I restarted my pc hitting the "Boot from CD" bit and I got so far ie the digits along the bottom then the title System recovery and my pc switched off............................which is my problem in the first place, my pc turns off if it starts normally

I have an old Advent 3119 which worked fine til now

So please please please help me
Many Ta's
Sue
