Cool

They said he'd be a great senior manager. I reckon with my level of ID 10T certification, I should be the CEO!

I really should keep up to date with this forum, but no one's told me if I did anything wrong installing my Audigy 4 in my 286 system box.

Since then, I got a new 16x Dual Layer Pioneer DVD+-RW slot drive. Should I be worried by the heat it generates? To be safe, I water-cooled it. I stood the drive on its end and stuck in a small hose and filled it with water. Then I sealed up the slot so I didn't lose any water. That stuff's expensive, and we're having a bit of a drought at the moment. So I plugged it in and turned it on, and apart from the small amount of smoke that leaked out of the joints, it seems OK. But I can't test it, cos the DVD's don't go in the drive any more. Did I do something wrong here?

Don't you just hate it when people quote your entire post then just say something like "Yeah!" or "Me too" or ""? I sure do. STOP IT!

A picture can say a thousand words don't you know I was simply surprised that:

a) "Mr. Muppet" was naive enough to think that a "sticky" thread with several thousand views and (more than) a few tongue in cheek replies was actually real (either that or he's actually hilariously funny to everyone except me)

and

b) The same person clearly hadn't bothered to read the replies of the thread up to his point of posting

Had you been around for more than 5 minutes you may have picked up on the fact that this is a friendly forum - telling people to "stop it" and implying that they're irritating you after only 12 posts seems a little harsh.

Happy Days...

K.

Water cooling is a difficult task, I went the other way and sealed the OUTSIDE of the case and placed the pc in a tank of ice cold water which I hooked up to the ice maker on my fridge using a slide I made from old drainpipe. It worked for a while but I had the same problem as Comer. BTW took me 4 years to build mine.

Exclamation Omg

I mean this with no offence at all, but.... (If this is a wind up then well done you have fooled a lot of people but if its not)

Im realy not very good at science but come on, It dont take much to realise the effect of water and electricity.
I mean..... ...... ....... ok im speechless. <<< HUGE Understatment
What can be said but if i were you just stay away from all things eletrical for the rest of your life. Live by candle light (make sure its guarded, im sure your wife wont want a fire aswell).

I might build a pc out of scrap and do the same just so i can realy picture the look on your face... Rofl

Where's that guy with Marvin as his avatar when you need him?
Marvin: Would you like me to stick my head in a bucket of water?
Trillian: What does he want?
Zaphod: I don't know, he just phoned up to wash his head at us.

Reading your post Comer and all of the subsequent posts since your fateful moment, reminded me of my own experiences while trying to liquid cool my pc, also through recommendations on this board.

Unlike you, I was told to use two tanks of fluid - one filled with oil as recommended by our Aussie pal, and also, due to its endothermally refractive properties, a tank of urine - seriously. The temperature differential created between the two liquids, supposedly creates the means for heat to be extracted endothermically from the processor surface, without the need for both fluids to flow around the pipe infrastructure. This then means increased efficiency due to less energy being required to pump fluids through the network and hence better heat reduction.

Another benefit of this process is that both urine and oil have extensive lifespans as heat removing fluids, and are not corrosive materials unlike water.

Anyway, I digress. I filled both tanks, switched on at the mains and after a large bang and terrible stench of wee and oil, discovered that my PC was probably going to no longer be with us. Extensive testing of the components which had failed led me to discover that the cause of the problem was far simpler than I had imagined - I had a small blockage in the oil pipe, resulting in my machine simply taking the p1ss.

Comer,

Have just spent the last hour wetting myself and unable to get up off the floor (not a nice predicament!). Brilliant post - Maybe we should ask the guys at Open University if they want build a course around your ground-breaking 'Hyro-Comical Physics' ...

... eagerly awaiting your venture into Genetic Engineering ....

It's been getting hot recently ... and in my new house with commercially installed central heating, I think it's a bit of a problem. So I found my heating unit and decided to - you guessed it - water cool it ! Now it's full of water that won't stay cold, and it steams a lot. Is it possible I might have done something wrong?

We're not laughing at Comer, we're laughing at that other guy who thought central heating meant sticking a fire in the middle of his house ... oh wait, that was me. ....

I think next time I'm gonna fill my house with propene gas so it'll hold the heat all the way through the house.

I'm sorry I don't understand. When I was at school many decades ago, my physics teacher (and why are they all short?) told me that pure water doesn't actually conduct. This really hacked me off because I had just built a rain detector using veroboard and a 741 op amp and the stupid thing wouldn't work. Outside it was peeing down, but my detector was blank. I put a wire across the sensor (more veroboard) and bingo it flashed and buzzed perfectly.

So did you add anything to your water? Any additive you perhaps thought might help, but were a bit ashamed to own up to? I only ask this because perhaps if you didn't add anything then the problem might lie somewhere else and it was just coincidence that your pc was switched on at the same time. Coincidences aren't that uncommon you know. Has your house ever demonstrated any other difficulties?

Many regards and sympathy (how is the wife feeling btw?)

Gordon

Well that's his problem then. I think he should try again with pure distilled water. Let us know the results please.

Would his system start having problems with electrolysis? All that hydrogen and oxygen coming off all the pins!!. Bit explosive!!

Theoretically, water should be explosive. It's made up of Hydrogen, which is fuel for a fire, and oxygen, which fires need to live. Why is it then, that water is used to PUT OUT fires?! It doesn't make any sense at all!

And I'm NOT just asking about this cos my attempts to design a water based replacement for household gas failed. Theoetically, there's nothing wrong with swapping the gas pipe with the water pipe, except now it's not smart to turn the heater on when you're in the shower.

Right that's it.

I've contacted the Brainiac Team (Science Abuse) a uk tv programme, explaining the situation and that we would like them to do the experiment on TV!

Why do it on TV when you can water cool from home?

Yeah, but after what happened to Comer and the abuse he suffered from wife, friends and fellow posters... I'm of a delicate nature and love my wife very much.

The first email to help@brainiac.co.uk bounced - their inbox was full!, so I'm trying their history@brainiac.co.uk. I sure hope they'll ship Comer over to the studios.

I have just read this thread from beginning to end and have been laughing out loud in a rather subdued open plan office.... So, If I get into trouble for non-work related activities I will hold each and every one of you personally responsible
