dvd disc encryption

Hi I've just rented the dvd 'Da vinci code' from my local public library and attempted to play
it in my pc's dvd rom. Power DVD wouldn't play it. Clicking on 'My computer' and then the drive that the disc was in, it asked me to put in a disc not recognizing the one already in there. This is the only disc that has done this, all other discs play without problems.

Except that this time no other disc would play. I got the same report.

The only way to restore the pc to its former obedient self was to re-boot, and than I could play other discs, but not Da Vinci Code. When I tried again with that one the same thing happened and another re-boot was necessary.

Have Sony devised a cunning plan to prevent copying or is there some setting in my machine that one of you clever forum members could advise me on?
