I can't download anything.

I recently bought a subwoofer with built-in room correction, it came with a software disc that you upload to your hard drive and then run to the sub and measuring microphone via long USB leads.

The program uploaded successfully but I just couldn't get it to run, despite navigating my way around all my programs. During the procedure, I noticed that my Avast antivirus kept popping up a warning for possible malware, which I ignored.

However, it occurred to me that maybe the antivirus was stopping the program from running so I uninstalled it and was mindful not to go onto the Web whilst I attempted to run the subwoofer program again.

Nothing. So I then went online and tried to reinstall Avast. Nothing. I tried Windows Security Essentials. Nothing. I tried at least two other free antivirus downloads and there's nothing in my programs or on the desktop. I've even tried to run some free online diagnostic tools to check for bugs but nothing seems to work.

A pop up does appear in the bottom right hand side of the toolbar saying "program has been successfully downloaded", but I just can't find them. And now I am running a PC without any antivirus and am terrified to do any shopping or check out my bank account.

What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help me please? Please bear in mind that I am not computer literate and that this PC is my first and was specced by friends, so any explanation needs to be in layman's terms.

I would be so grateful for any assistance, even if it is bad news, and before I attempt to call anyone out at great expense and learn nothing about the workings of my PC in the process.

Thanks
Derek

Look in the downloads folder under computer- users- your user Ie derek- downloads. You'll probably find in in there.

if not check out the download of the web browser! which one you using?

Try that,

Ryan

Hi Ryan

Thank you very much for your reply but I really am a PC numpty!

Can you please write your answer again in a series of steps?

I've looked under Administrator > Downloads and I can't see Avast or Windows Security Essentials there. However, I did manage to get my subwoofer EQ up and running today finally, it was under "All Programs"!

Oh, and my browser is Firefox but I don't don't which version, probably not the latest.

you looking for the install or the installed application?

I had put the steps into the original but here they are again:

Go start,

Computer providing its windows 7. If its not then its under my computer.

drive C or whatever the installed drive is for the machine. Its usually either C , D or A. by the sounds of it, you only have one hard drive for data installed so more than likely drive C.

go to users,

after this, you should see public and any other users Ie ( on my own pc, I have my user and public, thats it. but if more than one person uses it Ie like my old machine, it would have a user area for all the users ryan, derek, bob, etc. )

once into the user area for yourself, Ie Derek or whatever, there should be a folder called downloads. This is where the install should be for the antivirus that you have downloaded.

Also, in firefox, Try ctrl J.... This should launch the downloads for firefox.

Hi Ryan

Thanks for replying again.

I followed your instructions and the Public Downloads folder is empty as is the Firefox one too.

Now what? Shall I attempt to download Avast again?

Thanks

it seems like either the antivirus hasnt downloaded or the install has gone walkies..

I would probably try redownloading either one again. Try AVG aswell. Id try AVG first and then see if you can get avast to go. Just install Avg as full trial and get the use of the full package for 30 days without paying.

Hi Ryan

Thanks for sticking with me on this.

I attempted to download Avast again (and AVG), both times a little message appeared in the toolbar on the bottom right saying that the download had been successful.

I then went to drive C and clicked on Users - Public - Public Downloads and nothing.

I then went back to drive C and clicked on Program Files and a file I didn't recognise before called Alwil Software which lo and behold produced Avast5. Clicking on that folder produced another one called Setup, and clicking on that produced two Configuration Settings folders.

Now this is where I get confused: both were modified yesterday (which is when I attempted to download them after uninstalling Avast) but the creation dates on both are completely different.

"History" was created on 16.5.2012 (I don't remember doing this last week) and "Setup" was created on 9.4.2010. And clicking on both just produces a Notepad write up, it's still not on my desktop as a shortcut or listed in All Programs.

So yes, if either have installed then they seem to have gone AWOL and I can't find them, and I have absolutely no idea why they have gone AWOL in the first place.

Any suggestions or should I just admit defeat and get someone in?

Thanks
Derek

It's fixed!

I tried downloading Avast via Internet Explorer instead of Firefox, and a pop up window appeared saying that my security settings wouldn't allow it.

A friend very kindly and patiently on the phone talked me through enabling via the Tools settings what had previously been disabled. I don't know why my settings had changed; his theory was that Avast had told the PC to maximise my security in the absence of any antivirus software, but it is just a theory.

All I know is that I followed his instructions and it's come back.

Thanks again for your help, Ryan. I probably didn't help you by being so vague, but I never would have found these security settings if it wasn't for my friend's prompting in real time on his computer.

Phew, what a relief!
