Problems sending mail with outlook

OK, So I'm on holiday again and I'm trying to send mail to the UK using outlook express. I can receive mail fine, but when I try to send it I get this:

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop.dsl.pipex.com', Server: 'smtpauth.dsl.pipex.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421 Cannot connect to SMTP server **********connect timeout', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67

an anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong??

TIA

Strongly suspect that the connection is being blocked at some point on the network side. Do you have a google account or something you can use to send? (you can change the address you're sending from, at least with google, just have to verify ownership of the address through receiving an email and clicking on a link - or just piggy back on their smtp servers)

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that I would have thought that the outgoing mail needs to go via the ISP where you are located so in accounts it would be smtp.localispname.net or something similar.

I'm fairly sure the port is wrong. try changing the port from 25 to 465.

You will need to send via your webmail page.

Longer solution is to set up Gmail to send and receive your current email address on their servers as SeanT says.

I think most of you are barking up the wrong tree right now. If you read the error message it is a timeout message.
If you trace DNS records for smtpauth.dsl.pipex.com you get a Pipex Tiscali record. This would be available worldwide.
Where I would start would be in Outlook Express itself.
Tools ---> Accounts ----> Mail tab
Select mail account and click Properties
Select Advanced tab.
Server Timeout defaults to 1 min.
Try running the slider right over to long which sets it at 5mins then try the account again.

BTW where are you and how are you connecting ?

Thanks Guys.

I'm afraid I'm sunning myself in Barbados, you just know someone has to do it I had the same problem last year , trying to send my youngsters photos of fish. I can use pipex webmail, but it's nowhere near as friendly as outlook. I'm going to try the timeout suggestion when I've eaten breakfast (it's 8am here).

Unfortunately none of that worked. I did think that perhaps it was because I was not using the local ISP, what puzzles me is the fact I never have trouble receiving mail, just sending it and to me there's no logic in that. Thanks anyway.

No, I wouldn't have thought that would be the issue - as I said, normally with SMTP settings for ISPs these days, you have to enable authentication and specify the SSL port in manual configuration - might I suggest trying something like thunderbird or postbox, and following the instructions for a manual configuration?

Unless it is blocked locally or by the ISP, which port 25 often is (exclusively or selectively) in my experience. Not that being an enterprise sys admin and ex broadband engineer really qualifies me to rely on my experience in these areas.

if you were not in fact a human being, but a spambot - Spambot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - or a malicious port scanner - Port scanner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - then there would be plenty of logic in being more careful with your outbound (send) traffic rather than anything inbound, and indeed blocking outgoing mail unless you toe the line with the service operator.

Thanks Sean, but I have to admit I have no IT background whatsoever. Come at me with a pain somewhere and I'll tell you what's wrong. The human body is easy, we're all a set standard no matter who made us and to a certain extent quite logical once you understand the basics! I think I'll just give up and use webmail even if it is a pain to use, the rum will numb the discomfort
