Mic for rich sounding voice recording

I need to do some voice-over work and I'd like to get a nice rich sound.

I don't think I'll get that from built-in mics on computers, and I tried to use my Rhode Video Mic but the output is too low for my Mac to pick up sensibly.

Would I be better getting a 'pre amp' for that or just buying a USB mic?

Any advice welcome!

The Blue Mouse has a nice bottom end that suits 'gravitas' voiceover work. Pair it with any decent pro audio soundcard and you'll be set: Something like a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2.

The Electro-Voice RE20 is something of an industry standard though.
