PC to PC USB cable

I've just bought a new PC and need to transfer all my files across from old PC. I realise I need something like this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Windo...2129392&sr=8-1

but does anyone know if any high street shops sell them? I can't find anything at pcworld and maplins have something similar on their website but it's got a rubbish review.

I could do with getting hold of one for tomorrow.

Thanks

Leo

Those sorts of things are aimed at users with no idea what they're doing. Given you've got a popcorn hour I guess you're familiar with basic networking and have a fair idea of what files you want to transfer so I'd recommend just doing it over your network (share the folder on one PC, access it on the other), or paying a quid for an ethernet cable if you're all wi-fi and would like faster transfer speeds.

Even using a good external drive would likely give you comparable results, this review of the previous version of that Belkin device found a speed of just 4.4MB/s for a single 1GB file and barely a third that for a more typical transfer.

Dependant on how old the "old PC" is, you could just open them both up and then temporarily connect the old hard drive to the new computer.

It's quite simple if they both use SATA hard drives.

If the old computer uses an IDE/PATA hard drive or the new one is a laptop you may need a cheap adapter kit. link

I originally couldn't get the new PC to see the old PC on my network. I've reinstalled windows 7 on new PC and given it a different name, they were both called the same name not sure if this had something to do with it, and they are now both visible.

I did think about putting old hdd in but I don't dare risk turning PC off because it never wants to start up again!

850GB worth of files to copy now, woohoo!

Thanks

Leo
