Which HP inkjet printer/Scanner (cheap ink)

My trusty 14 year old HP deskjet 720c is finally starting to become crotchety and I have come round to the idea of buying a new HP printer/scanner.
However, I hate paying a fortune for ink and don't have a clue on the current generation of printers.
Does anyone recommend a robust, quiet HP deskjet/scanner printer which doesn't require ink which costs a fortune?
Help!

I use an OfficeJet 8500A Plus, which is printer, scanner, copier and Fax. The scanner has an ADF which is duplex, as the printer is too. Downside is it one would set you back close to £200, and is or about to be replaced by an 8600 range which uses different inks.

That said, the printer price is high by the inks are good value, a Black (940XL) will run over 2000 pages, more if you print in draft. The three colours inks (in XL or high capacity) will get you around 1200-1600 pages. The print heads are separate too, which is nice, they last for a very long time. Price wise the Black XL inks are around £20 each with the colour XL's £15 each. High quality can be slow to print, especially in duplex, but draft throws paper out at a close to the stated 30 ppm.

You also get 3 years on-site hardware support as standard, so should there be problems, they basically just give you a new one. if you have an iPhone or iPad it also supports AirPrint if you network it - which can be handy.

If you have a Staples / PC World / Curry's near by, worth checking them out as they have a number on display - I know my local Staples were knocking them out for around £150 as the newer model was coming in and they were getting rid of the older model.

Right, have done lots of internet research, looked at reviews and decided which printers actually look ok too.
I've narrowed it down to the HP 6500 Officejet wireless and the HP Photosmart 7510 wireless. Anyone have experience of either, or able to recommend one over the other? The 7510 is a newer model, but I realise brand new designs aren't always better.....?

I have the Officejet 6500A plus which has duplex printing. Cheap to run and good print quality. It is not a photo printer but does a pretty good job of photos.
