DVI to Display Port cable

Hi All

I have been searching for a DVI to Displayport cable and what comes up at amazon is a Displayport to DVI cable. So I assumed the cable will be the same as what I am looking for.

Ordered this one and when I connect my PC(DVI) to my Dell Monitor (Displayport) there is no signal.

Is this cable faulty, or am I using it incorrectly ?

I've never heard of/ never used displayport before.

I think the issue may be that the main video channels (Lanes in DisplayPort terminology) are swapped between source and sink. Therefore, the adapter can only be used on the source (Display Port to DVI) not as you are running it.

Or more simply, it's highly likely that your PC simply can't output DisplayPort video through the DVI socket as DisplayPort is the newer standard (which is why you haven't heard of it before). Vice versa is often possible (outputting DVI through the DisplayPort socket) which is why even reputable retailers sell these confusing cables.

Looking at the specs, DVI and DisplayPort are designed to be interchangable. The terminology on the connections is different, but the signal is pretty much the same. I did find on Wikipedia that the source and sink (PC and Monitor) ends of the cables are wired differently, so assume this is why the adapter does not work.

I have connected various Dell PCs with DisplayPort to a wide variety of monitors and switchers with DVI and HDMI inputs without issue. I think the rarity of DisplayPort only monitors is why you cannot find the correct adapter.
