Connecting laptop to TV

Hi All,
I am trying to connect my laptop to my 42 inch flat screen TV.
I have purchased a VGA o RCA cable to do this.
But, after trying several different appliance ie DVD recorder Video recorder .
Dont seem to be able to get the laptop screen to show on the TV.
I am plugging the vga end into the laptop and the green,blue,red ends into the Y Pb Pr slots at the back of the TV.
Any help ??

What kind of laptop is it?

Mines needs FN + F4 pressed to switch between displays
