Suggestions for smaller monitor for vid gaming

Aren't there any smaller monitors that handle non-native resolutions (720p, 1080p) with grace?

I got a PS3 a while back, and I want to take it away from the TV and use it by my computer, but my old 17" Samsung (730b) isn't HDCP compliant.

But given what I've seen with crappy scaling, I'd sooner buy a 19" 5:4 monitor, deal with the huge letterboxing, and have a nice, sharp image, rather than get a full or almost full screen of almost-sharp. Aren't there any other options? I know I can get something that can handle 1080 native, but that's simply bigger than what I'm after.
