Recording monitor input/output - how to do it?

I'm running some heavy duty software that allows you to be able to mix and scratch videos, like mp4's just like they were on vinyl! (Serato Scratch Live + Video plugin).

My set up as far as computer and outputs are
MBP Laptop OSX 10 (not quite sure .whatever but I try to keep it up to date, I'm on a pc atm)
Scratch Live GUI on the main screen
Video Output on the 2ndry screen a fairly basic monitor with just 1 input and no output.

All I want to do is record the video output on the 2ndry screen... It should be simple shouldn't it?

but the software I'm using doesn't have a video mix record facility...
I've tried using IShowU, which, I think is the mac equivalent to FRAPS? but the problem with this is that my MBP processor seems to be maxed out, even if I use lower quality settings!!!

My 1st thought was to use like a DVD recorder but apparently that's got problems too... http://www.avforums.com/forums/showt...10#post7639510
there must be better ways than that?

please, I'm not that technical so that is hindering my search efforts. What would you use to record the input to your monitor if you couldn't use the software on same machine? Baring in mind also that you also need to view this 2ndry output as it's playing and recording.

Re: Recording monitor input/output - how to do it?

VGA is the connection as well as the resolution, a VGA connector and cable can carry higher than VGA resolution. If you can convert it to component or something else that can handle the resolution the DVD recorder solution should work.

The passthrough on the monitor isn't needed and I don't know of any home monitors that do it, just use a splitter on the macbook end so the output gets cloned to both screens (or a second video out port if your macbook has it)

Obviously DVI to HDMI would be a lot easier but if the monitor only have one input I guess it's VGA. Can you send both analogue and digital through DVI-I at the same time?

Re: Recording monitor input/output - how to do it?

Do video splitters not degrade the quality of the output?

I'm not sure about the answer about if i can send both analogue and digital through DVI-I at the same time... + I don't think that my output is HD quality... maybe i should go down the conversion route as suggested in the other thread... I've just heard that using a splitter lessens the quality

thanks for getting back to me though, I think I've actually learned allot from your response
