Splitter box

Hi all,

once again I am in need of your expertise . The big cheese here has decided he wants to place several LCD TVs up on the walls in our labs.

What he wants is to have a nice big screen so when students/ customers visit they are all able to see whats going on screen rather than cramming round a small 19" monitor. So esentially we will have a monitor and TV showing the same thing.

I have been told the use a splitter box to output to both the TV and monitor is our only option. IS this correct?

BUT can you get splitter boxes which have both VGA to HDMI outputs, or VGA to DVI?

Any thoughts?

Without knowing where the signal is coming from it's a little difficult to answer the first question. If this is a desktop then a graphics card would be more flexible (I assume it's only got a single VGA output integrated graphics right now) as it could display both identical images and different images.

It'd also be a lot cheaper as while you can get VGA to DVI/HDMI converter boxes they tend to be rather expensive.

If you've got a machine where adding a new graphics card isn't an option and it does only has a single VGA output but is still a PC of some sort then a USB graphics 'adapter' may be worth looking at. I don't have any experience of them myself but some do come with digital outputs and I'd assume it's possible to clone the normal video output to them. They do tend to be limited in resolution, so you won't get 1920x1080x32@60hz from one.

If it's some sort of proprietry device then I think the splitter and a converter will be your only option, I don't know if you can get splitters with built in converters.
