Which Bluray Re/Writer ?

I need to replace a crappy Sony Optiarc DVD drive on my recently re-built desktop machine and I’m wondering whether to get a BluRay Re/Writer item to - future-proof the kit.

I’ve never used Bluray before & am not sure just what to look for (if anything) – is it just speed ?
Are any features due to change soon ? Things seemed to have been a bit static for a while.

I still have an old LG DVD installed – that the Sony was supposed to replace.

What entry level items are recommended ? When I say ‘entry level’ I don’t want the cheapest thing out there, if the next one is significantly better for a few quid. Nor do I want to spend money on a 'brand' if it's no better than the others (my garbage Sony comes to mind).

Any help or advice appreciated.

Thanks for reading this.

That's strange. Sony Optiarc are among the best DVD burners around. Which model do you have? My 7241s works quite well. However, I recently added a Pioneer BDR-207EBK, which I think performs well at reasonable price. It is a 12x, no riplock, also burns really well DVD supports, is compatible with BD-XL (100 Gb and 128 Gb support). If you don't think that BD-XL can be of some use in the next future (support are now extremely expensive), I suggest to buy the cheapest. I think in our days all BD burners are more or less equivalent.

,,,, when you spend enough.

I decided that I don't really have a need for BurRay right now, so I bought a Samsung S222AL, and another Sony, AD7261S (I got it half price).

Like you – early days,,,,, in fact I havn’t used either yet.

Good luck with yours & thanks to all replies.
