Thumbs up Birthday computer

Hello Guys.

I will be 70 on Dec 31 and my family have clubbed together to buy me several present I really wanted, Last on the list is a fast 1 Tb harddrive Dual core desktop PC.

There is about £300.00 left in the kitty, I can add a little more if necessary

Can anyone recommend a useful PC that would fit the bill, I have decent monitor, printer/copier etc.

Thank yo in advance for any input from you wonderful people out there, I have been here several times and each time I have not been disappointed by the response to help.

Thanks guys.

Judda.

Re: Birthday computer

For configurability, ease of use and reliability I'd head off to Dell UK: Laptops, Desktop Computers, Monitors, Printers & PC Accessories - maybe look around for offers and get cashback via Quidco.co.uk for example.

If you fancy putting a machine together a lower end Shuttle with your required spec may come in for just around that number.

Re: Birthday computer

Hi Judda,

I bought a Dell Studio XPS when they were first launched, it is a bit OTT for what you need, but my tip is, don't order a PC from there web site, ring them up and tell them you are tempted, but need to discuss the price. Basically the sales guys (Indian call centre unfortunately), are authorised to give a 10% discount. They will try and offer you a 5% discount, just stand your ground, say you can only afford it with 10% off, and they will offer it to you. If you say you can't do it at 5%, and that you will ring them back if you change your mind, they won't let you leave the call, they will offer you the 10%.

I gave this advice to a friend of mine recently, who played hardball with them. He was buying a top end PC, but he rang up saying he knew he could get 10%, but this wasn't enough, what else can you offer, and they came back with 12.5%.

I guess the discount it is down to who you get on the phone, and how much you are looking to spend.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Re: Birthday computer

Hello GaryClough,

It certainly does help, thank you so much, I will tell my son about this tip also.

I think with all the help I have been given here, I will be able to come up with something decent.

Thank you once again.

If you're considering a dell, have a look at their 'outlet' shop where they sell refurbished/cancelled orders at a discount.........

Dell Outlet - Refurbished Computers - Refurbished Laptops - Refurbished PCs

Re: Birthday computer

Hello Bribrian,

Thank you for the info, I am overwhelmed by the response I have had from you guys.

Thanks for the early birthday greeting I have been feeling my age lately, all that garden clearence and pruning for the winter...

My son has with all your help, sorted out a system which he thinks I will appreciate, all with the help from the forum members.

I would like to take this opportunity while replying to Bribrian, to thank everyone who has has some input to my question of bargain basement buying..

I don't know which system hes been bought, nor how much I will have to contribute, (if at all) I will inform you guys ASAP as soon as I know..

Thank you all.

Judda.

Re: Birthday computer

LOL...Thanks Bribrian,

I am sure I will enjoy the speed at least I have been told it is a Dual core/ 1 terrabite machine, and thats it.

Oh, and I told my son I bought a Synapsis 2.0 USB extension yesterday, and he told me off in no uncertain terms, he said " you will have a 10 USB port Computer soon". Ha Ha ha.

Slowly and surely I am gleaning the information.

Judda.
