Formatting DVD-RW disc

Hello,

I'm trying to find out how to format a DVD-RW disc after performing a full erase. I didn't know that a full erase completely wipes the disc of every piece of information, including the recognition code at the beginning, thus rendering it compeletely unidentifiable by whichever drive into which it is being inserted.

Extensive web searching has proved utterly fruitless until I saw a thread from this site which commented that a DVD-RW disc can be formatted but, frustratingly, it did not specify how!

Does anyone know of any software that will format this type of disc or any clever tricks that will return it to the state it was in before being written on?

I use the discs for "backing up" DVD's but have recently been in need of putting newer material on them. However, after using Nero to perform a full erase of the discs, they are now effectivelty useless until I can find out how to format them again.

Hoping someone out there can help.

Thank you.

Re: Formatting DVD-RW disc

You don't need to format a DVD-RW......... When Nero writes some thing on it, it does it with no worries.

Re: Formatting DVD-RW disc

Thanks for replying. I wasn't using Nero to write to the disc. I was converting an avi file to DVD format using convertxtodvd which has its own burning option once the file is converted. Searched the application for an erase or disc format facility but it does not have one. Erasing the disc with Nero has made it useless!

I looked on AVI to DVD Video Converter Software VSO ConvertXtoDVD Download now

Looks like a good software but never came across a problem like this.

I use magix movie edit pro 2005 to convert avi (VHS) files to DVD that was made in 2005, if that finds a DVD-RW it asks me
:-
Do you want to erase y/n

then it erazes the DVD

With convertxtodvd it was only made recently and should be the same.

With convertxtodvd have you tried to erase a disc any way to see what happens as it should do it with no worries.
