DVD-R burning problem... HELP!

Got aNEC 3500, had it for a few years now (3 or 4) and ive burnt about 500 disks, never had a single problem

until today! just bought 100 dvd-rs from play.com and for some reason i keep getting an error in imgburn and nero, says illegal disk, i thought maybe it was the new disk, so i borrowed a different disk off a mate, and same error!

below is the error log, any help would be awesome, ive today updated the firmware in the hope that that would sort it out... but get the same message

Re: DVD-R burning problem... HELP!

First thing I'd try is making sure DMA is turned on.

Re: DVD-R burning problem... HELP!

I don't know Win 2000, but go into control panel, System, hardware, device manager and double click on the NEC.

Then I've forgotten

You need to change PIO to DMA.

A net search should put you right.

I'm not saying it'll definitely sort it, but it is the wrong setting, I reckon.

Re: DVD-R burning problem... HELP!

had a google and on 200o you hve to click on the ide chanells... done that and there all ultra ATA (for hard drives) and the dvd drive theres only 2 options PIO mode & DMA mode if available, its set as DMA if available but in the little box its got set to PIO mode, ive no idea what the difference is, im sure DMA is right and i think it was that way before, and ive no idea why its changed but it dont seem to be a way to change it back as it seems not to be available/ :S

Re: DVD-R burning problem... HELP!

Hmm, I'm struggling now.
"DMA if available" should be ok though.

Hopefully someone else can help you out, but I would say that I owned an NEC and it just packed up.
It may be that it's just gone duff and needs replacing, which is no big deal with the low prices now.

Out of interest though, what exactly are you trying to burn and what method are you using?
eg DiVX as a data disc, etc

Of course, it could still be that the disc doesn't suit the writer.

Re: DVD-R burning problem... HELP!

Hi,

don't know what your codes mean but I eat a burner every year and always around the 600 burned DVD's.
Everyone says it should do more but my Nec's mostly are over around that amount of burned DVD's
I don't mind because they are around 25/30 Euro new so .....

Re: DVD-R burning problem... HELP!

just annoying if i have to buy a new one cos im skint !

i was thinking maybe it was the disks, but ive tried 2 different brands and both seem to fail before the burning even starts

Re: DVD-R burning problem... HELP!

If your burner is at the end it will work mostly if you start your PC the first time of the day.
My experience is that after 1 burn it is over again.
I also did lot of trying but if you really did not change anything and did not download new drivers what can it be.
Just try to burn a CD, if that works you know for sure is the end of the laser lifetime.

Re: DVD-R burning problem... HELP!

Swafe, did you fix your problem. I'm pulling my hair out at the moment because I'm having similar problems to you. I have a Samsung S203 SATA drive which I've been using for 18 months burning Taiyo Yuden TYG03s quite happily. Then after about 80 disks in a stack of 100 I start getting mostly failures. I had a new stack of TYG03s and they also mostly fail. I tried some of my old TYG02s with the same problem. I thought it must be my drive so I bought a Pioneer DVR216 and I'm getting exactly the same problem. Then I thought I had to try another PC. I've tried both drives in my HTPC and I still get failures.

Can all my media be suddenly failing or is it something to do with both PCs or have I somehow got two defective drives.

I'm running Vista 32bit on both PCs and using Nero 7 on one and CDBurnerXP on the other. The drives show up as UltraDMA on my HTPC. On my main PC I'm connecting to a JMicron Sata controller with the lastest drivers. I've tried the native SATA ports on the motherboard without success. I had originally moved away from them as I was getting power calibration errors in Nero. This time I'm getting illegal disk.

The disk burns always fail at the lead in stage.

This is driving me mad. It's costing me a fortune in expensive Taiyo Yuden coasters and I don't know what else to try.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Teresa

Re: DVD-R burning problem... HELP!

Teresa,

did you try to burn a CD?
If that works It can be all your DVD's but I rather think it's you burner. Even a new one can fail also I don't think it's common. But the new one can be returned and changed for an other one.

Try the latest firmware for sure, that was my problem with a new blurayburner. No burning and a lot of errors, new firmware and it was burning like an afterburner.

Succes, Ochi

Re: DVD-R burning problem... HELP!

Thanks for the reply Ochi. I have just tried some Verbatim CDRs and the one I tried on my HTPC with the Pioneer drive failed, but I managed to burn four of them successfully on my main PC with the Samsung drive. However, I don't think it's the DVD media as I'm now successfully burning my fourth TYG03 on my husband's laptop running Windows XP. It's only an 8X drive but seems to have no problems with the media.

My Samsung drive is running the latest firmware. I'm not convinced that both drives are faulty although it could be possible. I've read reports of Vista SP1 causing problems with SATA drives and that seems to be a common factor here. Microsoft even have a fix for the problem The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista I've looked at my registry and only have lower filters which I have deleted. I have yet to try burning to see if there is any change.
