is weather proof trunking available for cat5e cables?

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help?

I'm running some cat5e cable from my lounge, along the outside of my house and into my study upstairs through a hole drilled in the wall.

Obiously it would be ill advised to just have the cable unprotected. Is some kind of weatherproof trunking available to shield the cable from the elements?

I hope this question dosn't seem daft, but its the only way I can get the cable into my study without channeling into walls in 3 rooms.

ps -forgot to add the trunking must be large enough to house 2 cables.

Cheers in advance for your advice and recommendations.

Jamie

Hi,

Some 20mm Plastic Conduit will do. You can get it in Black or White and is easily bent with a spring that you can get from the same place that sells the conduit. It obviously comes with 'inspection boxes/elbows' that do right angles, etc. It is easily joined with glue. Electrical wholesalers and B&Q etc will help. It's also quite cheap. You could of course go for Galvanised conduit but it is a lot harder to install and requires specialist equipment for cutting the threads to join to the boxes. It's also more expensive.

Thanks

Mel

I remember when I was doing some work in Jordan in 2006 where we had to use local galvanised conduit (which was cack anyway!). Had to use a semi broken bending machine for imperial conduit when the stuff we had was metric and had a blunt and nakkered die for threading it, which was also imperial! Most fun ive ever had... Not!

As sparkybun has suggested though conduit would be your best bet. Either that or external/duct grade cable

Hello jamienufc

If your forming a 'PC' network have you considered 'HomePlug' Ethernet over the Mains devices as an alternative to the external cable runs; http://www.devolo.co.uk/uk_EN/index.html

If you are only doing a couple of runs you can get external CAT5e cable easy enough

Re: is weather proof trunking available for cat5e cables?

Just for info, I used a cat6 cable in an unprotected run of about 75 yards at my old place to run internet from the main house to the annexe.

I never had a moments problem in over 5 years. As long as it's not in direct sunlight any degradation will be minimal.
