Which Cat5 cabling route should I take??

Hi,

Having read alot about video over cat5 on this forum recently I'm now looking for some advice on which route to go. I'm trying to get video to the panasonic plasma which will be sited more than 10m away from the source and I don't want any physically bulky cabling between them hence cat5 and given that the difference between rgb and component signals as far as picture quality goes is minimal my options are:

1. Use a js technology rgb scart to component converter at the source end and then use sheilded cat5 cable terminated with phono plugs to connect it to the panny - as per technique posted by tomatoface

2. Use a suitable rgb scart balun at each connected by utp cat5 - brand suggestions welcome

Any help would greatly appreciated.

Personally I wouldn't worry about using sheilded cat5e, if not teminated properly it can be no better or even worse than standard Cat5e as the sheild can act as an aerial.

Other than that you idea sounds fine, but don't forget about your audio. If you want component and audio then you will need two cat5e's and two pair of baluns.

Re: Which Cat5 cabling route should I take??

I would go the Balun route. Technically it is better because they should be designed to match the impedance of the phono connection to the imedance of the cat5e cable and then back again at the other end.

Performace wise there would not be much difference in it over short distances but it is better to use baluns.

Have a look at madnat.co.uk to see the range that you could use.
