What has my electrician gone and done...

During recent renovation of the house the electrician ran dual Cat6 cable from a central point (the hub) to every TV location in the house.

Recently when I was away on business he terminated the Cat6 in the Hub in to wall boxes. This is annoying as we had previsouly talked about terminating them with RJ45 plugs so they could be plugged into HDMI/Cat6 extenders.

I could easily pull the cables out of the boxes and re-terminate with RJ45 plugs but I now won't have the length on the cable that I need to plug into the extenders in a tidy manor.

My questions is (and I know it is not reccomended) will HDMI/CAT6 extenders work through this connection at the wallbox? So the path will be:

Sky HD box > HDMI > HDMI/Cat6 extender (Sender) > Cat6 > Cat6 wallbox > Cat6 > HDMI/Cat6 extender (Reciever) > HDMI > TV

If the wallbox was to cause issues what do I need to look out for (other than no picture appearing at all) i.e. poor or distroted picture/sound?

Thanks
Dave

Re: What has my electrician gone and done...

It is best to avoid unnecessary joints when using HDMI over twisted pair extenders but not impossible to work around them.

We recently had a situation where a developer was forced to 'remodel' a few rooms in a big refurb and all of our carefully planned/installed/tested cables suddenly 'terminated' in the middle of completely new shaped rooms!!!

We used 'inline' Krone/IDC type CAT6 termination blocks to add the required extensions to all of the cables - the two un-terminated cables 'meet' within the inline termination block.

Joe

PS Don't worry you'll 'spot' a non functioning system quite quickly!!!

Re: What has my electrician gone and done...

This is how the system is supposed to work, the electrician has done the job correctly as long as Cat6 wallboxes were used.
In terms of performance one of the biggest risks is the flying leads from the wall to the equipment (e.g. extender) as these can get twisted, crushed etc.

Re: What has my electrician gone and done...

Which 'system'?

Apart from the recently announced HDMI over IP solutions that are coming out 'soon' most HDMI over Twisted pair solutions are not designed to work in a conventional 'Ethernet' infrastructure and can be problematic when you introduce wall plates, extenders, patch panels etc.

Trollslayer - can you point me in the direction of a Cat6 wallbox?

I did not realise there were differences between normal RJ45 backboxes. I may have gone and specced the wrong boxes for the boss's house!

The Just Add Power HDMI over IP solution is available now, and is being used by various CEDIA award-winning integrators.

Re: What has my electrician gone and done...

Joe,

Can you send me a link to the product you mention ('inline' Krone/IDC type CAT6 termination blocks) as this may be a good backup plan for me if my setup does not work through the wallboxes. I'm assuming this item does the same job as a RJ45 coupler just with RJ45 plugs being involved.

Thanks
Dave

Re: What has my electrician gone and done...

Will do - I'll check with the install boys and confirm what units they use.

There are NO RJ45 connectors involved - using the screw/punch down inline coupler makes a more reliable connection.

Hey Joe,

I'll be running 2x Cat5e to each of 8 rooms for HDMI over Cat5e with an Octava 8x matrix switcher. Are you saying I should terminate both ends of these cables with RJ45 and running them straight from the Octava without going through a patch panel on the hub end and without going through a wall plate in the room ends?

Re: What has my electrician gone and done...

Hello calibos

Point to Point is how we do all of our installs - we use/supply the Brush style face plates that allow you to push through multiple bare or pre terminated cable ends.

The brush plates can be single or double back box style and now in quite a range of finishes.
